Law degree from University of Cambridge
[edit]I don't think he ever received a law degree from Cambridge. Is there any source? Kancat (talk) 17:14, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
According to his biography on the International Court of Justice website which is cited in the article, he earned a Bachelor of Laws degree (L.L.B.) from Cambridge. --TommyBoy (talk) 03:11, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
- I think I know how the misunderstanding might have arisen. In 2009, Owada was elected to an Honorary Fellowship at Trinity College, Cambridge. In a little biographical statement from the annual record, it says:
- "President Owada came to Trinity in 1956 to read for the LL.B. in International Law, and stayed on for a further three years to do research on ‘Third Party Beneficiaries of Treaties’. Most unfortunately, the work that he did, of which there was only one copy, was lost in transit on his return to Japan, and he was not able to submit it for a degree." [1]
- It is understandable how someone could read this to mean that he never received the LL.B. he originally came for. But what it really means is, he did receive the LL.B. and then "stayed on for a further three years" to do work toward a higher degree, but never received that higher degree since his work was lost in transit. I would note that in Owada's CV as circulated by the UN Secretary-General (http://undocs.org/S/2011/454) at page 25 of the PDF, it does clearly state his 1956 LL.B. from Cambridge, with no higher degree (other than honorary degrees).
