"Most powerful light" claim

[edit]

I cannot find a source for the claim that this is the world's most powerful lighthouse. Mangoe (talk) 01:09, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kevin McCarthy's Florida Lighthouses says that the light was increased to 550,000 in 1936, "making it one of the most powerful lights on the east coast at that time." It was increased to 2,000,000 candlepower in 1966, but as of 1990, the light was 370,000 candlepower, when it could be seen 28 miles away "on a clear night". Maybe when it was at 2,000,000 candlepower it was the most powerful light in the world, but McCarthy says nothing about that, and the 370,000 candlepower in 1990 is considerably less. Unless Crompton's "The Lighthouse Book" supports the claim, and I don't have access to it right now, then the claim should go.
