No references to meme status?

[edit]

I read through this page thinking there would be something on the famous Christmas in July advert, which has become a meme among YTPMV'ers and SiIvagunner fans. 68.186.169.45 (talk) 23:57, 8 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, I feel that meme isn't notable enough to be included in the article. I'd be surprised to see an article from a reliable source cover it. Mayhair (talk) 11:30, 7 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Take notice of this article

[edit]

Not sure if Gregg Appliances was the old name... if it is, I'd personally use it, but... this is essentially how we do this whole title thing right. Don't worry about those dots in the logo, because they're irrelevant; focus on print. Don't worry about any lowercase guideline; they're commonly misread, barely work as is, and are guidelines that need to be evaluated every chance one can spare. Assessment comment

The comment(s) below were originally left at Talk:H. H. Gregg/Comments, and are posted here for posterity. Following several discussions in past years, these subpages are now deprecated. The comments may be irrelevant or outdated; if so, please feel free to remove this section.

Indiana assessment
The article contains sufficient information, reliable sources, and holds a NPOV. The article flirts some with an advertisement sound to it's wording, some minor changes in wording can remedy this. The article needs a logo added to it and perhaps a picture of it's HQ building/office in Indianapolis.

Requested move 30 July 2017

[edit]
The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: moved to H. H. Gregg (closed by page mover). DrStrauss talk 18:45, 8 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

hhgreggHHGregg – hhgregg is difficult to read. Capping the H, H and G removes this problem, without adding unnecessary dots and spaces. Sb2001 talk page 19:05, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

NB, the company is called Gregg Appliances, Inc., not hhgregg. And, readability does factor into it, eg this page had its name changed recently for this reason. –Sb2001 talk page 23:16, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that the current name and appearance of the article's title is the WP:COMMONNAME for the subject. Also, the example you provided seems to be "apples and oranges" compared to this move request since the new name "TheGuardian.com" seems to be an option for WP:COMMONNAME for that subject; "Gregg Appliances, Inc." is not the WP:COMMONNAME for this subject in the least. Steel1943 (talk) 23:52, 30 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I was not suggesting that Gregg Appliances Inc should become the name, because of WP:COMMONNAME. Accessibility/readability should be taken into account. And, as you can see from the website, the Guardian's formatting is all lowercase and one string of letters, albeit separated by a colour–change. –Sb2001 talk page 22:44, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Sb2001: Just an FYI: After reading the additional comments below, I have changed my "vote" to "Oppose move as proposed" since I'm not opposing any move, but rather just the proposed one. Steel1943 (talk) 00:24, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
We had this problem at T.K. Maxx, where a user suggested that this should be followed. The question I then presented was whether it is actually a name, or even tries to be one. I do believe that keeping close to the same formatting, whilst improving readability is the best course–of–action. –Sb2001 talk page 22:44, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
As described in the article, the brand was founded by a man named Henry Harold Gregg. It is simply his name. —BarrelProof (talk) 23:32, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That is what happens when you do not read things ... Even so, I believe that – because the company is not called 'H. H. Gregg' – the article should only gain caps, not stops. –Sb2001 talk page 23:43, 31 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
See also J. C. Penney, which omits the stops in its logo styling. —BarrelProof (talk) 00:09, 1 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And in what way is it to the benefit of readers to be led to believe that the company has spaces and full stops after both initials, when – in fact – it does not? I very much doubt that anyone would struggle to read HHGregg. May I just point out that the discussion is about moving it to this version. It is currently hhgregg, which is confusing. When I google 'hhgregg', two out of the first five results contain 'HHGregg' in their title: [1]; [2]. Not one of the results has 'H. H. Gregg', of which you suggest the presence will be beneficial to readers. You need to provide evidence of this being a good idea. And, actually we often do mimic logo styles, see JPMorgan Chase as an example. MOS:TMRULES states that editors should not, ' "correct" the spelling, punctuation, or grammar of trademarks'. What you are doing is trying to change the page name to be in-line with the MoS, thereby breaching this guideline. Adding caps is not changing spelling, punctuation or grammar; adding spaces and full stops is.–Sb2001 talk page 18:13, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
JPMorgan Chase appears to have never been the subject of a discussion about the appropriateness of its title. Perhaps it should be. —BarrelProof (talk) 18:58, 4 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And in what way would anybody with more than three brain cells to rub together think that "the company has spaces and full stops after both initials" is what the title of an article would be intended to imply? Does the title Jim Johnson (New Jersey politician) imply that "New Jersey politician" is part of the guy's name, or is it just there because there's another reason why the article can't just be at "Jim Johnson"? Bearcat (talk) 03:36, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
People are supposed to be able to trust an encyclopaedia as a reliable source (or, collection of sources). Anyone with a basic understanding of English knows that a pair of brackets inserts a non-compulsary sub-clause. It is WP policy to include this sort of information in the name of an article which is not the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC, or where there could be ambiguity. I have directed you to the policy section which explains that one should not alter the 'spelling, punctuation or grammar of trademarks'. If people see 'H. H. Gregg', they will assume that that is the company's name, which it is not. –Sb2001 talk page 16:12, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That rule refers to the body text of the article. It does not refer to the title, where the rule is that correct encyclopedic English trumps non-standard corporate marketing stylizations. Bearcat (talk) 18:13, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am assuming that by 'standard' English you mean what is listed in the MoS. Because there are plenty of places where it is not standard to place full stops and spaces after initials. There are only two options which make sense here; either keep it as is, ie no caps, or cap the H, H and G. Otherwise you are altering the name. Also, you are suggesting that what is in the article should not be altered. I take that to mean that you think all instances of 'H.H. Gregg' need changing to hhgregg/HHGregg. Correct me if I have misinterpreted. –Sb2001 talk page 18:20, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"H. H. Gregg" versus "HHGregg" within the article

[edit]

The RM discussion has been closed with a decision to use "H. H. Gregg" as the article title. However, at least one editor seems to think that the styling of the name that is used inside the article should be different from what is used in the title, per this edit. I disagree, and I suggest that we should resolve this by discussion here on the Talk page. —BarrelProof (talk) 17:53, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the following discussion, and express opinions regarding the matter there. The resulting policy may then be applied to this article; Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style/Trademarks#MOS:TMRULES. –Sb2001 talk page 23:17, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
