I can find at least two references on the web that say that Mary Daniels was Judge Charles Daniels' sister - a piece in the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record (I had to use Google's cached version of this, the webpage refused to load) and John A. Hosmer's bio in the History of the Bar and Bench of California, where it lists his various prominent relations, including Judge Daniels, specifically stated to be an uncle on his mother's side. So, at the very least, John Hosmer was claiming that Charles Daniels was his uncle (and I don't see why he would make that claim falsely, he had plenty of prominent forebears already.)
