Yesterday, I spelled his name incorrectly in another article and a member corrected me by spelling it "Hesychios". I wonder if Hesychius is a modern latinization of the name? From what I have seen in Latin the name is spelled Hesychii, not Hesychius. In that case isn't Hesychios more proper to use? Fkitselis (talk) 15:53, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hesychii is the Latin genitive, as can be seen here. The nominative is still Hesychius. Likewise with the classical Greek forms (which I Romanize here) Hesychiou and Hesychios, respectively. Latinizing Greek names like that was common practice both with the Romans and in the later learned Latin. /--Keinstein (talk) 20:27, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And let me add that "Hesychius" is also by far more common in English usage (just as Plato is more common than Platon, Thucydides more common than Thoukydides, etc.), which is why we title the article that way. Wareh (talk) 20:36, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both for the clarification! Fkitselis (talk) 12:49, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
