Position

[edit]

As to not violate WP:3RR, I am bringing this to the talk page. I see no issue with Perez being described as a utility player on the page; he played seven positions during his early career and later pitched IIRC. If anybody has any policy-based objections, please raise them here; otherwise, in one week's time, I will change it back to "Utility player". Thanks, Willsome429 (say hey or see my edits!) 23:58, 19 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Observations from a neutral party; Is it more common to list the current positions? See José Martínez (baseball, born 1988) and Patrick Wisdom. You could certainly argue that a player is "utility player" but isn't that more of a category than a position? Looking at the what links here page, it seems like a fair number of similar players are described as "infielders" or "utility infielders." It appears that Perez is listed simply as an "infielder" in the roster. OhNoitsJamie Talk 03:54, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for providing neutral thoughts, I appreciate it. If the Cubs list him as such, I'm not going to argue with them, which is funny, because the IP insisted that he played outfield. The difference (imho) between Perez and Martinez/Wisdom is that he still has 189 career outfield appearances in his career in addition to all of his infield work, per Baseball Reference. Martinez has nothing outside 1B/OF and Wisdom is a true 1B/3B. Most of my experience with historical baseball pages has come through NPP, so I'm not sure if there's a precedent to change it to all positions played after a career is done or not. FWIW, just asked someone who is an MLB aficionado; they agreed that "utility" makes the most sense given the wide variety of positions he's played, including in recent seasons. OhNoitsJamie Talk
Thanks for grabbing yet another opinion on the matter. Willsome429 (say hey or see my edits!) 17:50, 21 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
