Herbert Coates
[edit]I am the grandson of Herbert Leopold Coates. I have done a lot of family history research about him, particularly as he was recently awarded (postumously) a "Golden cap" and so entered the Centenary Cap Club of the Royal Navy, having played more than 100 games of football for the Royal Navy. In fact, he was the first person to do this. I have looked at his birth, marriage and death certificates, along with many Census entries and no where is the name "James" mentioned. All his family in the London area called him Bertie, never Jim. I think that during his time in the "Royal Oak" pub, the nickname Jim was started. This unfortunately could be the source of the name James. Again, I can confirm that the name James is not him.
