Largest herbaria
[edit]Does anybody know anything about the largest herbaria in terms of number of species? Aelwyn (talk) 09:25, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- Herbaria seldom track of advertize that information. The Index Herbarorum doesn't keep track of it either. Part of the problem is that names are constantly changing, and the largest herbaria may have specimens more than a century old. Worse, many of the Paris collections are organized by collector rather than by taxon, which makes counting them very difficult. --EncycloPetey (talk) 14:11, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- I suspected this info didn't exist. Thank you anyway. Aelwyn (talk) 17:05, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
Let's talk about size, again.
[edit]So, herbariums are talk on the front page today, stating that Kew in the UK holds the largest herbarium in the world. Yet, visiting such page on Wikipedia, states it's the fourth.
Which is correct? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.100.151.204 (talk) 08:39, 6 October 2010 (UTC)
Hope to see it translated into Arabic in Wikipedia soon. The translation of Herbarium in Arabic is المعشبة. Theopal (talk) 23:29, 17 October 2011 (UTC)
Digitization
[edit]I added a bit about Digitization under the collections management heading, as it is an ongoing project or at least of concern for any major herbarium. I will also mention that I did so because I'm trying to kick-start the Virtual Herbarium page as part of a school assignment Itsdavidbaxter (talk) 15:14, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
Herbar? Really?
[edit]I have added a 'Citation Needed' tag to the first line, referring to 'herbar'. I have experience in English herbaria and have never encountered this term, nor can find any reference to its use online, so propose to delete it unless genuine evidence of its use can be offered. Either way, it certainly does not deserve to be a statement in the first line of the article. However, having worked in Herb. BM and managed Herb. DBY for many years, it seems more likely that this term is being confused either with the Index Herbariorum international identifier of herbarium-holding institutions, and the way these institutions are then referred to, or (far more likely) is the use of 'herb.' or 'ex herb' on herbarium labels to indicate from which collection the specimen sheet came from, meaning 'from the herbarium of... - I've never heard it as English either, only as German. Since there is no citation, I think it could be summarily removed. Sminthopsis84 (talk) 23:13, 2 February 2016 (UTC)
- Done. My impression is also that it is was a Polish or Germanic word.Parkywiki (talk) 09:08, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

Novel uses
[edit]Under "uses," I added a quick sentence about the emergence of novel, non-traditional uses for herbarium specimens.[1] I also added the number of type specimens held by the Linnean herbarium to clarify its importance in context. [2] RosemaryGlos (talk) 00:46, 23 October 2019 (UTC)
