Genealogy?

[edit]

Personally, I don't object to this page being here, . . . but under the WP rules ("What Wikipedia Is Not"), I think this would jhave to be considered "genealogy." Henry Younger's only claim to fame was being the father of the Younger brothers and if it weren't for that happenstance, he would not be worthy of inclusion on any other grounds. --Michael K SmithTalk 18:08, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think this genealogical entry and that of Bersheba Leighton Fristoe are needed to support the reader's understanding of the James–Younger Gang and the Younger brothers. By not having them, there is a risk that these people and the family details will be written about in greater detail in multiple other articles. At least here it is all provided in a single place and the article serves as a "list" for other articles. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 20:15, 26 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree. per WP:NOTGENEALOGY, WP:NOTWHOSWHO, WP:NOTEVERYTHING, and especially WP:INVALIDBIO: relationships alone do not confer notability. According to Henry Washington Younger and Bersheba Leighton Fristoe (her first name name was Bursheba, by the way), the only noteworthy thing they did ever did was have sex and give birth to truly notable people. That does not merit a devoted, stand-alone Wikipedia article for each progenitor (otherwise EVERY politician, artist, athlete, actor, or scientist on Wikipedia would also deserve articles for their parents, right?). Per Wikipedia:Notability (people), has either parent received significant, independent coverage? If reliable sources only cover the parents within the context of their notable children, then all relevant info can easily be summarize in existing articles without the need for wikilinking or an article (e.g. "Cole Younger was the son of farmer Henry Washington Younger and his wife Bursheba nee Fristoe). Being a footnote in history books does not warrant a standalone article. There is a plausible claim to independent notability for Henry as a mayor of a tiny town (Harrisonville, Missouri), but popping out kids or moving with notable relatives is insufficient. There is no compelling reason (besides turning Wikipedia into a Find a Grave or FamilySearch clone) to keep either article, and Bersheba Leighton Fristoe should probably be redirected to Henry Washington Younger via {{R from spouse}} if this one is kept. --Animalparty!
