"Superbus"

[edit]

The descendance from a supposed Roman named Superbus could never be proven by the family nor by any scientists in modern times. Among Colognian patricians, not unlike certain royal families, it was fashionable to make up a lineage from the ancient Romans who founded the City of Cologne. Not a single one of these could be proven and is rather unlikely. Often the German "family names" (family names very slowly established themselves since the 12th century) were latinized for prestige. Also, documents were written in Latin for some time whereas the German family names, if available, were latinized; not always successfully as not all monks who could read and write were good at Latin. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2003:46:1A08:5282:3565:F025:EDFC:A6B4 (talk) 15:28, 4 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
