Profession (title)

[edit]

This piece begins by identifying Henry Ellsworth as an 'administrator.' Surely even in encyclopedia-speak, we ought to be able to come up with something better. Ellsworth was briefly mayor of Hartford, basically founded the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was commissioner of Patents, during which time he made several decisions on new technologies and inventions that would shatter prior assumptions and change the direction of the country. He also travelled across the west, was an early president of a major life insurance company and was a major donor (for the time) to Yale University. Calling him an 'administrator' makes him sound like a paper-shuffler at the local social security office.MarmadukePercy (talk) 12:22, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Familial relationships

[edit]

The article is unclear with regard to the parentage of Nancy Goodrich, as are sources. Biographical sketches of the graduates of Yale college calls her daughter of Elizur Goodrich (Yale 1779), and sister of her husband's classmate. Our Chauncey Goodrich article states that Nancy was his daughter. Muddying the waters, I think, is the fact that it is not always clear if Elizur Goodrich (Sr) or Elizur Goodrich (jr), and sometimes, Chauncey Goodrich vs Chauncey Allen Goodrich, is being referred to. - Nunh-huh 10:15, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I think I've clarified it: the problem was sentence structure rather than a wrong relationship. The relationships seem to be as follows:
David
Goodrich
Elihu Chauncey
Elizur
Goodrich
Catherine Chauncey
Noah
Webster
Rebecca
Greenleaf
Chauncey
Goodrich
m1. Abigail Smith
m2. Mary Ann Wolcott
both marriages childless
Elizur
Goodrich
Anne
Willard
Allen
William
Wolcott
Ellsworth
Emily

Julia

Goodrich
Henry

Ellsworth
Nancy

Goodrich
Roswell

Annie

The Chauncey Goodrich article was wrong in identifying Nancy as his daughter; both his marriages were childless. I have fixed that article. -Nunh-huh 17:56, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
