cartoons and Fitton
[edit]The article says
"A great supporter of the work and importance of Mary Anning, of Lyme Regis, Fitton drew a sketch, in 1830, entitled 'Duria Antiquior - A More Ancient Dorset', . . ."
This presumably refers to William Henry Fitton, but as far as I can tell it was De la Beche, not Fitton, who drew these cartoons. Fitton isn't previously introduced in the article in any case. Unless someone has better information, I'll change the reference to "Fitton" to "De la Beche". Cephal-odd 02:14, 5 April 2007 (UTC)
De or de?
[edit]Ah, the De thing. I've checked at the British Geological Survey, and they use "De la Beche" throughout; so too do the la Beche archive at the National Museum Wales, and these are close to being the most authoritative sources possible, so I suggest we do the same. Even if we were to be French and use "de", it would be capitalised at the start of sentences. So I'll boldly go there, if that's ok at this season. Chiswick Chap (talk) 08:32, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

Legacy section?
[edit]I've just added reference to the De La Beche Society at ICU changing their name to distance from slavery history. This follows nicely on from the para about the medal, but I wonder if it would be better to create a separate section to put these bits in, as currently they come under the 'surveying' section which doesn't make a lot of sense. Note there will be more to add soon as IC have announced a review of colonial history, in which they said they have removed De La Beche's bust from public display. I think this is worth mentioning on the page, just awaiting wider coverage of this so we can cite something more authoritative than a press release.
ETA: De La Beche also published a book about the situation of negroes, in 1825, in which he describes the number and conditions under which his more than 200 slaves lived and worked. This is obviously relevant to his page, but am not sure where best to insert it. It doesn't belong in a "Legacy" section, as his legacy is obviously much greater than this, so maybe we would be better to concentrate the plantation/slavery links into one section ("Plantation ownership" or "Slavery links"? Something more neutral?). Open to suggestions otherwise I will have a go and others can change.DrThneed (talk) 00:13, 2 July 2020 (UTC)
