NPOV

[edit]

@User:I dream of horses: I have restored some of your cuts, and here are my reasons:

  • (1) Church's role as a patron of the arts is an important aspect of his notability, so I reinstated that fact to the lead of the article.
  • (2) In light of your NPOV criticism, it seems to me that his exact net worth does not need to go in the lead, so I put that in his biography, under the section dealing with his family.
  • (3) However, I do think it is important to note that his family was an old New England family descended from the first European settlers. This helps characterize him and there is nothing "un-neutral" about it. It would even be a relevant fact for an article about a living person. (You said you made this cut because of NPOV.)
  • (4) I understand you think the description of him as handsome etc. violates NPOV, but this description is paraphrased nearly verbatim from an article written by someone with firsthand knowledge of him, i.e. Claire Paulhan, the granddaughter of Jean Paulhan. I urge you to reconsider this cut, since I think it gives more color to his personality. However I've left the cut as you made it. But I did reintroduce some language to explain why he hired a financial advisor. This was directly related to his feeling of being "pumped" by scenesters, essentially, as Claire Paulhan states in her reminiscence.

@Wwallacee: When describing someone as "handsome", it is much better to quote somebody like Claire Paulhan directly, and not just say it ourselves.
You seem to have phrased things much better, though (not describing the spending money on the arts as "spent promiscuously" , etc.), so I've basically kept it the same, with only two minor adaptations; one of them being a "block quote" to make things look a little better, the other changing "a considerable fortune" to "money", which sounds more encyclopedic in my opinion. The statement just afterwards makes it clear that the fortune was considerable, anyways. -- I dream of horses  If you reply here, please ping me by adding {{U|I dream of horses}} to your message  (talk to me) (My edits) @ 04:26, 1 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]
