History

[edit]

Existence of the hemangioblast was first proposed in 1917 by Florence Sabin, who observed the close proximity of the emergence of blood vessels and red blood cells within the yolk sac in chick embryos. (1) This hypothesis was further supported by the fact that endothelial cells and hematopoietic cells share many of the same markers, including

Developmental Origin

[edit]

They are derived from the posterior primitive streak region of the mesoderm in the gastrulating embryo and are traditionally identified by a population of cells that are positive for expression of Brachyury and Flk1 proteins.

Proof of Existence

[edit]

Evidence of its existence was first shown in vitro in mouse embryonic stem cells, where a single progenitor cell was found to differentiate into both hematopoietic and endothelial cells. (2) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sdh4-NJITWILL (talkcontribs) 15:10, 11 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
