Communist? How so?
[edit]I gotta ask about this in the hope of expanding this article. Sweetfreek 18:46, 27 December 2006 (UTC)
Bunched up "edits"
[edit]This article has a huge problem with "bunched up edits" because of the large template. I don't know what can be done about it. —Mattisse (Talk) 20:56, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
Rename?
[edit]I've NEVER heard her referred to as anything other than "Helen Gahagan Douglas." Even the article mostly refers to her as Gahagan Douglas or simply Douglas. I see no reason why it should be named "Helen Gahagan." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.218.220.25 (talk) 22:28, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
- I agree. Propose move to "Helen Douglas".--Wehwalt (talk) 23:31, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
Rename !!!
[edit]This article needs to be renamed "Helen Gahagan Douglas" as this is the name the lady is best known by. I tried to do it already, but there's an empty article called Helen Gahagan Douglas that needs to be deleted or something first. Kenatipo (talk) 03:24, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
- Done. Are you planning to improve the article, btw?--Wehwalt (talk) 03:30, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for doing that, Wehwalt. You don't think the edits I've done so far have improved the article? Kenatipo (talk) 15:28, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
- Seriously, though, I didn't know anything about her except her name until the other day. Any further edits by me will be minor. Thanks again! Kenatipo (talk) 15:33, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
- They are indeed an improvement, and thank you for the work. I've had her on my improvement list, but I haven't gotten around to doing much. I meant in terms of moving it towards GA/FA. Incidentally, I am hoping the article on the Senate race, which treats her very fairly and gives her biographer the last word, will appear main page on November 2.--Wehwalt (talk) 15:36, 17 October 2010 (UTC)
Later life
[edit]The "Later life" section is unbelievably short! Today's featured article, United States Senate election in California, 1950, has information in the "Aftermath" section that at the very least should be copied into this article. IMDB mentions some Broadway appearances in the 1950s here. BTW, the election article says it was Manchester Boddy, not Gahagan, that coined the name "Tricky Dick". 86.41.26.32 (talk) 10:42, 2 November 2010 (UTC)
Alan Cranston quote
[edit]The quote as it is is too long. The second paragraph is in effect a biography. The article should say whatever needs to be said within the article, and not re-hash it in Senator Cranston's eulogy. Also, I don't appreciate the edit summary of "please be collaborative." It's what I'm trying to do, and put-downs like that don't help. Scolaire (talk) 22:53, 9 July 2011 (UTC) P.S. I just made some adjustments to the article.Mx96 12:05, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
- I am sorry to have made you feel that way, Scolaire. And I understand your point of view. Of course eulogies are often biographical, and what I find striking about the paragraph in question is that it is filled with feeling and allows a reader, who might not have known the Congresswoman, to experience, somewhat viscerally, the effect she had on those who did. Does this make sense to you? Maybe there is another place for it…? Or maybe it can be edited. By the way, I think you are right about the “Appointments” paragraph; that probably should be shorter.(Mx96 talk) 03:09, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
- I would prefer both: to edit it and to put it in another place. I feel that a quote of that length, and at the tail end of the article, takes from the article rather than adds to it. However, you seem to be committed to the article for the long haul so I'm going to leave you to do as you think best. It wasn't actually me who suggested shortening "Appointments" but, having looked at it, I agree. Scolaire (talk) 10:45, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
Prior to reading the above note from you I just made some adjustments to the article. Hope you find them to be improvements. Mx96
At last I get it and I agree with you, Scolaire. I did not think in terms of the Later life and death paragraph ending the article. I have returned it to your version.Mx96 12:22, 10 July 2011 (UTC)
Family
[edit]Her marriage to Melvyn Douglas produced two children. Surly worth a mention?Shipsview (talk) 13:09, 11 October 2011 (UTC)
Nixon cast votes contrary to national security?
[edit]The statement "It is not widely known, however, that the personal and political attacks between the opponents began when Douglas stated that Nixon had cast votes contrary to national security". was removed on the grounds that the stated source made no mention of it. Can this be verified from any other source? Shipsview (talk) 19:51, 26 March 2012 (UTC)
Kennedy supported Nixon in 1950?
[edit]The article states "Historian Stephen Ambrose and author Tom Wicker also note that Nixon's fellow Congressman John F. Kennedy donated to Nixon's campaign against Gahagan Douglas." There's no citation to help the critical reader locate where Ambrose and Wicker may have noted this. For Ambrose, I've located a reference in Nixon: The education of a politician, 1913-1962, pp. 210-211, which is also cited in United_States_Senate_election_in_California,_1950. Ewilen (talk) 14:54, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
- good work, I added it. Rjensen (talk) 15:01, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
