I did not read the book but a significant scene in the movie was where Bobby correctly picks the money card at the carnival stand by staring intently at the man's eyes instead of the cards. I cannot say what this might have meant, but it must have some significance. PS I am the one that removed (accidentally) the "Ironic" comment below. I had never contributed before and just messed up. My apologies.

Dark Tower the reason it failed?

[edit]

Not sure the movie was a failure because they removed references to The Dark Tower. Seems more like an opinion. Not really NPOV. Have a reference for that fact?

POV moved from article

[edit]

I've removed the following section from the article. It's POV to say that the film needed to be enhanced, and that it's too fast-paced, and since there's no source for it, it shouldn't be there.

As for the second part, about how the movie differs from the book, I don't see how the example given shows that at all. As far as Bobby, the narrator, knows, Carol is dead. He would have no way of knowing that she faked it. It actually serves as a reference to later parts of the book, by acknowledging (in a realistic, non-omniscient narrator way) that the events in the book would eventually unfold. In its own way, that keeps with the book precisely.

I also don't see a great departure from the Dark Tower material; the "low men" are not explained in the film, but they're not explained in the novella either. Their significance is only evident to those who have read the Dark Tower series, and that's true with both sources. They're not made out to be U.S. government agents any more in the movie than they are in the book; the FBI doesn't usually communicate with kite tails and "lost dog" posters.

Removed content:

Novel vs. Film

Many story elements contained in the Hearts in Atlantis collection itself that would have served to enhance the story in the film. Because the latter parts of the collection were not included in the film, the ending makes less sense and arrives at a much faster pace than it should have. In fact, the film varies from the novella significantly in that Bobby Garfield's childhood love (Carol Gerber) is said to be dead in the film as opposed to the scenario in the novella in which Carol fakes her death, essentially starting life anew under a completely different name.

Material removed from "Reaction"

[edit]

I've removed the following sentences from the section on reaction to the film; these criticisms need to be sourced to a notable reviewer before they can be included in the article.

One possible reason for this is a common problem with films based on author Stephen King's work; the storyline was too condensed and omitted many things from the overall plot of the novella, leaving audience members confused, especially at the ending.

Gay and lesbian film critics also noted that having the bully as a repressed homosexual was too much of an old Hollywood cliche.

Advice removed from page

[edit]

I removed the following from the bottom of the page (below the categories):

Note: If you haven't read the book, don't bother seeing the movie. The movie is kind of like a highlight reel, leaving most of the story untold....

Fair use rationale for Image:Hearts in Atlantis film.jpg

[edit]

Image:Hearts in Atlantis film.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. "Ironic remark" removed

[edit]

Ironically, the title "Hearts in Atlantis" refers to a later story in the book with none of the characters or plot elements of the film (except for a college-age Carol Gerber).

I removed that from the opening paragraph, it felt a bit POV. I didn't find anything ironic in the film title since Ted's reflections mention Atlantis a couple of times, for example: "Sometimes when you're young, you have moments of such happiness, you think you're living in someplace magical, like Atlantis must have been? Then we grow up and our hearts break into two." Arkhaeopteryx (talk) 16:15, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
