Harness racing
[edit]H'ville is known for its red-clay harness racing track, the only notable one in the southeastern U.S., as I understand it. Can anyone provide some reliable info on this track? I have been there and remember it as an oval with some kind of water-works facility at the center. How long is the course? What races are regularly run there? How old is it? Who owns it? -- Rob C. alias Alarob 17:39, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
History
[edit]Hawkinsville is on the Ocmulgee River. The city's namesake is Benjamin Hawkins, U.S. senator from North Carolina, then Creek Indian agent from the 1790s until his death in 1816. The community across the river (Hartford?) is older than Hawkinsville, but is not incorporated today. A cholera epidemic blighted the city's fortunes around 1830(?). It was a contender to be the state capital, and is one of the state's older interior cities. When did its population peak? Questions to be answered in a History section. If anyone knows good sources, please recommend them here. -- Rob C. alias Alarob 17:44, 13 October 2007 (UTC)
