The article is not about the Scout group but about the iconic building which may in the near future be listed as a historic building. The history is not only of local interest but of wider interest. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tirotai (talkcontribs) 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Where is it?

[edit]

Can you add to the article some small clue at least as to where it is located? Malcolma (talk) 08:27, 20 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Building date

Based on the following, Victory and Hawke appear to be parts of the same troop. The boatshed was erected after Nov 1928. Prior to that, both parts met at separate facilities. Victory on at least one occasion used a boatshed at Herne Bay Beach (not Cox's Creek).

Hi @DMBanks1, from my research Victory and Hawke Sea Scouts were two different sea scout companies (later troops), as noted with the different contingents being represented at the meeting of Sea Scout Officers in December 1928: https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/SUNAK19281212.2.194.7?items_per_page=10&query=%22hawke+sea+scouts%22+victory&snippet=true&sort_by=byDA
I think there might have been an error made in 30 Nov 1928 as all other references to the boat shed at Coxs Bay are to Hawke Sea Scouts. It is possible that the two groups combined at a later date, given their closeness geographically, and that they are undertaking joint activities on Hawke Sea Scouts' land on Pine Island.

Hi @Ewhite31 You are absolutely correct that the two groups were different. To clear up the discrepancy regarding the date of building the first boatshed on Coxs Bay, Hawke advised that the structure was initially erected without permission from the council (apparently not unusual in the NZ context at the time) and permission was granted retroactively later in the year.
