Notable buildings and areas
[edit]I will be adding a notable buildings and areas section shortly, which will largely seek to increase the account of the biodiversity of the area. I may add to or move some of the landmarks text accordingly. Paolo.oprandi (talk) 08:27, 30 August 2021 (UTC)
The war
[edit]Article says "The village came into existence when construction of the railway was halted by the war". Which war was that? I think it ought to be specified. --A bit iffy 12:10, 18 February 2006 (UTC)
Film
[edit]I note having just watched it that the Jack and Jill mills are pivotal in this Michael Caine movie "The Black Windmill" from 1974, especially the climax: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0071229/ I leave one of the locals to add it to the main text and delete this note as its not really my page to edit. ...Enjoy your place in movie history! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.92.230.173 (talk) 19:07, 18 April 2010 (UTC)
Automated Peer Review
[edit]The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and might not be applicable for the article in question.
- Avoid including galleries in articles, as per Wikipedia:Galleries. Common solutions to this problem include moving the gallery to wikicommons or integrating images with the text.[?]
- Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (numbers), there should be a non-breaking space -
between a number and the unit of measurement. For example, instead of 5260 metres, use 5260 metres, which when you are editing the page, should look like: 5260 metres.[?] - Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (numbers), when doing conversions, please use standard abbreviations: for example, miles -> mi, kilometers squared -> km2, and pounds -> lb.[?]
- Done Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (headings), headings generally should not repeat the title of the article. For example, if the article was Ferdinand Magellan, instead of using the heading ==Magellan's journey==, use ==Journey==.[?]
- There are a few occurrences of weasel words in this article- please observe WP:AWT. Certain phrases should specify exactly who supports, considers, believes, etc., such a view.
- Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
- Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “
Allpigs are pink, so we thought ofa number ofways to turn them green.”

Gallery
[edit]Should this article have a gallery? See WP:IG for the relevant policy. I personally think it comes the section One rule of thumb to consider: if, due to its content, a gallery would only lend itself to a title along the lines of "Gallery" or "Images of Hassocks", as opposed to a more descriptive title, the gallery should either be revamped or moved to the Commons. The full descriptions, plus the fact that some of them are not on Commons, prevents me from being bold and unilaterally removing the gallery. ++ MortimerCat (talk) 05:42, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- From my point of view, and I guess I am biased as I contributed at least a couple of the photos, is that the photos and their descriptions add valuable information to the article. As an example Butchers Wood would never require an article of its own, it doesn't require a photo/mention in the Hassocks article but anyone who doesn't know Hassocks and wants to visit would possibly find it useful and interesting to know that there is an ancient woodland alongside the village. --Paste Let’s have a chat. 06:19, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- I am not suggesting removing any photos and text, just the way they are arranged in a gallery. To me, it looks more like a picture book or travel guide than an encyclopaedia. I would use the text to expand the articles under the appropriate sections, illustrated by the pictures. For example, Butchers Wood would come under the section heading of Landmarks. MortimerCat (talk) 06:41, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- My apologies, I misunderstood you, in that case if I was you have a go at rearranging and let's see what it looks like. --Paste Let’s have a chat. 07:53, 9 April 2009 (UTC)
- My current project is adding a landmark section to the parish articles, and by coincidence Hassocks was next on my list! MortimerCat (talk) 21:37, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Which platform are the Lifts going to be installed?
[edit]- "The station is due for redevelopment in 2013, with the addition of lifts on either platform."
I'm assuming this should read "...lifts on both platforms."??? 193.113.37.9 (talk) 14:23, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- Indeed; now reworded accordingly. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 15:52, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- The original looked alright to me, meaning a lift on each.--Charles (talk) 17:19, 19 October 2012 (UTC)
- I think it was a colloquial use of the word "either." Generally, "either" tends to imply that one of two possibilities is true, but not both. I think "both" is a better word to use here. 193.113.37.9 (talk) 10:23, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
