An Irishman playing an Englishman in Scotland…

[edit]

Harry Towb had a long and successful career, but although he was Irish, he may have been best known in Scotland for playing a patronising Cockney in a series of adverts for Younger’s Tartan Special beer, in which he would poke fun at or dismiss some element of Scottish life, only to be won round by a pint of beer, to which he delivered the tag “but your beer is good!” So successful were the ads, that one in which he dismissed Arbroath smokies as making him cough was pulled for allegedly denting the sale of kippers, with Scottish & Newcastle Breweries facing possible legal action from the Arbroath Fish Buyers’ Association. Towb was reported as saying in interviews that Scots were surprised to find out that he wasn’t English, and spoke with an Irish accent in real life. Jock123 (talk) 13:42, 24 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
