Longest Established Restaurant Chain?

[edit]

I don’t quite understand the claim that Ramsden’s is the longest-established restaurant chain in the U.K. Firstly, the citation is to a single article about a TV show, but although I’ve read it through, I can’t find the support in the article - was it made on the show, perhaps? Secondly, reading the rest of the Wikipedia article makes the claim highly suspect: although the initial restaurant was opened in 1928, the company wasn’t expanded to a chain until 1988, making it to my eyes a late-comer, the chain history only starting 60 years after the fact. Wimpy still have outlets, and they were a chain before Ramsden’s; in fact, as Wimpy became combined with the Lyon’s Corner Houses, it would be possible to trace that organization back decades before Ramsden’s. You’d also have to rule out small, non-national “chains” - people with two or three chip shops or café’s in a selection of regional towns might easily qualify. I’d say that the claim - whilst good marketing puff for the company - is not substantial enough to stand, and probably needs further verification if left to stand.
