Harrison Ruffin Tyler would probably not merit a separate article on Wikipedia if not for the accidental historical curiosity that he is a grandson of a minor president who was born in the 18th century. For a long time, he and his older brother were equally famous for this reason, so, it seems that his older brother, Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr., should at least be mentioned in the article.
Other than the fact that Lyon passed away 4 years ago, I don't see where Harrison is any more notable than his older brother. Pascalulu88 (talk) 19:04, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I disagree that the reference to his older brother does not fit with the rest of the article. The only reason that these two men are widely known at all is because of the historical curiosity that the grandchildren of a minor president who was born in the 18th century lived on into the second decade of the 21st century. There is no reason NOT to mention his older brother at all. Do you know for a fact that Lyon Gardiner Tyler does not merit an article of his own? But at the very least, there is no reason why his name should not be mentioned in Harrison's article. The two brothers were both reported on together in various articles before 2020. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/10/07/us/lyon-gardiner-tyler-jr-dead.html
I added mention of his brother in the article. IMHO, this suffices and I'm not convinced that he should be mentioned in the lead of this article which is supposed to focus on Harrison's notability. Please feel free to start a stand-alone article on his sibling if you assess that he passes WP:GNG. TJMSmith (talk) 22:38, 27 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is getting to be silly. Most people, if they know of the two brothers at all, know of them as grandsons of John Tyler. Period.
It does not disparage Harrison Ruffin Tyler's reputation as a restorer of historical properties to mention the main reason why he and his brother are famous. The two of them should be mentioned together at least once in a sentence that acknowledges the fact that the historical curiosity of two grandsons of a president born in 1790 surviving into the 21st century IS the primary reason why most of our readers would be looking for an article on HRT in the first place. The New York Times, in its prominent obituary of Lyon Gardiner Tyler, Jr., thought the fact notable enough to mention. Why should the merest mention of it be repugnant to you?
