Listing?

[edit]

Is there a reason this page contains the Chinese given name and notable figures, but no other individuals by the name of Hanbin? (Regardless of romanization).

Would it be inappropriate for me to change the Han-bin section from a “see also” to the main page, and include notable page links there, so it would overall improve the functionality of the page?

Right now if someone looked for the artist B.I by his birth name Hanbin, they would need to search, be directed to this page, click “see also”, go onto the han-bin page, and then go to his page there. That seems clunky and ineffective.

Since you said korean isnt your area, I’ll note than the only reason a - is included in the name, is because in the revised romanization it is an optional inclusion when spelling, however its not commonly used in practice, nor is it the “correct” romanization, simply an option. So there is no practical difference between Han-bin and Hanbin, and having them listed seprately is misleading at best.

Since you made the last edit, I will ask for your opinion here as well, user:davidwr Jayb.rd98 (talk) 21:22, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I had a similar concern, but I realized this page and Han-bin are both in that grey area of "should this page be about just a name" or "should it be about all words spelled this way." That doesn't have a "correct" answer, which means it should be discussed. I would recommend letting this be and just "take it as it is" for now. When you are more experienced, you can open up a discussion at the right venue. I've been here years but names are not an area I spend a lot of time in, so I'm not sure where the "right" area is. My first guess would be one of the WikiProjects listed at Talk:Han-bin but I could be wrong.
I have a "sense" that if you were to open this discussion before getting a lot more familiar with how Wikipedia works, it could be a frustrating experience. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 🎄 22:08, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What would the function of this page be, then, if not to direct people to pages by the name of Hanbin? Right now the wikipedia search for any korean individuals under the name hanbin is complicated by this page, since by normal spelling, most people wouldnt be searching han-bin.
Ill open up a discussion on one of those pages, but I don’t think intentinally leaving the page in a state where it is unhelpful to people searching on wikipedia for Hanbin is beneficial?

@Jayb.rd98: Well, but for the two items that are not related to people's names, the function could be similar to that of Han-bin - to be a page about the Korean name.
Personally, if I could wind the clock back to 2006 when these pages were created, I would have a single disambiguation page, but I might also have an article called Han-bin (Korean name) that was JUST about the name Han-bin aka Hanbin as a Korean name, and one called Hanbin (Chinese name) that was JUST about the Chinese name, but in both cases it would NOT include a list of names. But it's 2020, not 2006, we have to respect the 14 years of history that came before. If I really wanted to make that major of a change, the first step would be to start a community discussion. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 🎄 23:04, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
user:davidwr Understandable, if a little frustrating that the way the pages were set up originally limits their functionality today. I’d imagine it would be a large project to take on to fix that, and allow more functionality and ease of searching. I’m concerned about how Wikipedia allows the searching of other articles under korean names, if the different ways of romanizing has damaged the searchability of this single page so much. Since, like I mentioned before, theres now several hoops to jump through and numerous pages that don’t get displayed when you search Hanbin here. I wonder just how broadly the romanization effects the acessability of korean based wiki pages.

Navigation isn't the only way to find things in Wikipedia. There is a search function built in. If you are on a desktop computer or using the "desktop mode" on a mobile web browser, it is near the upper-right corner. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 🎄 23:13, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
user:davidwr Understandable, I’m just not sure what the full function of the page is currently. Its a disambiguation page, which serves to list articles related to Hanbin, however it doesnt list them all, and is inconsistent, so does it really serve its function as a disambiguation page currently? Jayb.rd98 (talk) 23:20, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, something needs to be done. There is no hurry, Wikipedia won't die if this isn't fixed this year. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 🎄 23:37, 22 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • There is 汉斌 and there is 한빈. One of them is Chinese language, the other is Korean language. Therefore, we should only have a single disambig page, equally addressed by Hanbin and Han-bin. One section would say that 汉斌 is romanized here as Hanbin, while the other would say that 한빈 is mostly romanized here as Han-bin. Obviously, this would encounter the withstanding of all these people who know better how other people should practice the romanization of their own language.
