Talk:Hamerkop
The shape of its head with a curved bill and crest at the back is reminiscent of a hammer, hence its name.
[edit]That's a straight bill, or I'm blind.. and whether curved or straight, it looks nothing like a hammer. Am I missing something? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.73.70.113 (talk) 04:23, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
- The combination of head and crest is "reminiscent". Note this was back in the day when a manatee was reminiscent of a mermaid! Sabine's Sunbird talk 07:12, 23 November 2011 (UTC)
Tricky statement
[edit]Scopus, a database of abstracts and citations for scholarly journal articles, received its name in honour of this bird, as the hamerkop is renowned for its superior navigation skills. Nothing to this effect on the scopus website; and hamerkops aren't navigators. Sabine's Sunbird talk 04:31, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
- Cited, but statement about navigation removed as the species is sedentary. Sabine's Sunbird talk 04:36, 17 June 2017 (UTC)
Per discussion at WT:BIRD, removed the following The hamerkop's behaviour is unlike other birds. One unusual feature is that up to ten birds join in "ceremonies" in which they run circles around each other, all calling loudly, raising their crests, fluttering their wings. Rather dubious, can't find it anywhere else. Sabine's Sunbird talk 07:34, 4 July 2017 (UTC)
