Hamas

[edit]

While its true that Hamas is the acronym of the Arabic phrase "حرکة المقاومة الاسلامیة (حماس)" (harakat al-muqawamat al-islamiyah), I think it can't be ruled out that they intentionally named their group so that it looks like Hamaas. Aminabzz (talk) 11:55, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

When did it start publishing?

[edit]

According to this auction site the first issue was printed in Heshvan 5706 (October 1944). However, the newspaper "Hama'as" was banned in Palestine in June 1944 (Palestine Gazette, No. 1344, Supplement 2, 29 June 1944, p600). This suggests it was already in existence by then, unless it a different publication of the same name. Zerotalk 23:51, 3 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lehi Road

[edit]
@Zero0000: On a related note, that you might be able to help with if you are knowledgeable on this stuff, can you confirm what Lehi Road, Tel Aviv is named after? running parallel to Haganah Road, it seems fairly obvious? but a source would be good. I wonder if the street itself was the target of the recent bombing (Lehi Road bombing, street name also redirects there), but that seems kind of weird? @FourPi: I don't know the answer, but I can report two things. (a) It wasn't called that in 1958, (b) In Hebrew it is spelt לח״י, which has the mark indicating that it is an acronym. That makes the meaning 99% sure but it isn't good enough. On Google street view I can see an explanatory sign but it is too blurry to read. You might be able to find a source by searching for "דרך לח״י". Zerotalk
@Zero0000: Thank you. What's the source for the name change in 1958? that would be good to include if it is citable? FourPi (talk) 08:24, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I have an 1958 map. The name must have been changed later than that, but I don't know when. If I had to put a dollar on it, I'd guess it was during Menachem Begin' reign as PM. Again, no proof. Zerotalk 08:51, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
