Transport
[edit]Following apparent reference to an HMS Windsor Castle serving as a troop transport in 1883. No commissioned RN ship of this description is present in Navy Lists, as used by J. J. Colledge, as either a new built ship, or a hired, requisitioned or purchased one. There have been 15 civilian Windsor Castles since 1838, and prior to that the packet ship Windsor Castle is known to me as being in service in 1807 (Capture of the Jeune Richard). The likelihood is that the crew of HMS London were put on one of the civilian ships if - "Paid ship off" "Sent ships company to transport Windsor Castle in passage to England" is anything to go by.
