Lev Praha is a new franchise

[edit]

It seems very clear, the KHL stated that explicitly several times, the Lev Poprad and Lev Praha are not the same franchise. It is therefore not correct to include the list of franchise scoring leaders from the Poprad team. Wild8oar (talk) 14:21, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Web site

[edit]

I noticed that someone put LevPraha.cz as offical web site. However, for me that is still an inactive web site ("Default page ACTIVE 24"). Where does that information come from? Wild8oar (talk) 14:23, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I did put LevPraha.cz as the official website here. According to CZ.NIC's website (NIC.cz) the domain is registered by HC LEV , a.s. So it's IMO official. Also I've just added a link to the official Facebook page. The page says "official page" however I'm not 100 % certain (unlike with LevPraha.cz) --IJK_Principle (talk) 19:25, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
...and thus the can of worms if openeed wherein HC Lev, HC Lev Praha, and HC Lev Prague are all official names. --Львівське (говорити) 19:47, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also one small detail: As with LEV Poprad, the club's name is "HC LEV Praha" and not "HC Lev Praha". In the Czech company register (can be viewed by searching justice.cz (input "HC LEV" into "Obchodní rejstřík" field and press "hledej", it will find HC LEV , a.s. and the old HC LEV Hradec Králové)) the company is registered as HC LEV , a.s. (a.s. stands for akciová společnost (meaning share/stock company/corporation)). Obviously as with Poprad's team all the media will refer to the team as "Lev" instead of "LEV". --IJK_Principle (talk) 20:07, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The logo and the facebook says LEV, so maybe the media will follow suit --Львівське (говорити) 20:11, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Also about the logo - although the official Facebook page uses it, it has been said it's not the final logo. So I guess it can be used in the article for now, but it's not the final logo (it's just a temporary official logo) --IJK_Principle (talk) 21:25, 31 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK, then we can believe that levpraha.cz is the official web site. Hopefully it will soon go online. About LEV vs Lev: since Lev is clearly in the meaning "Lion" and not an abbreviation, we should spell it as Lev. According to MOS:TM, we should "follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules, even if the trademark owner considers nonstandard formatting official". It could be that similar style guides exist also for newspapers. Wild8oar (talk) 06:33, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Standard English doesn't apply to Czech, though, right?--Львівське (говорити) 13:43, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
First, the English rules apply to how it should be formatted in wiki, not about the origin of the word (as it is about trademarks, they could be in any languages, also invented words). Second, I don't think that LEV is standard Czech formatting :) Wild8oar (talk) 13:58, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
According to the official Facebook page (facebook.com/levpraha) the official website will be online in 10 days time. So stay tuned! --IJK_Principle (talk) 06:49, 2 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So it's been "a little bit" more than 10 days now, but according to official Lev Facebook the website is indeed levpraha.cz and it will launch this week. --IJK_Principle (talk) 14:07, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Twitter says "The official Twitter account of the KHL's HC LEV Praha". Facebook says the same. I'll throw my hat in the "HC LEV Praha" page name vote.--Львівське (говорити) 15:25, 26 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
How about "Hockey Club Lev Praha' (often stylized as HC LEV or known as Lev Praha) is an..." --Львівське (говорити) 14:02, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hockey Club Lev Praha is too long, all the links from other articles would have to be modified as [[Hockey Club Lev Praha|Lev Praha]]. I would say Lev Praha or HC Lev Praha. But I agree with the "often stylized as HC LEV" part. Wild8oar (talk) 14:12, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think its that long, just look at any European soccer club, like Aston Villa F.C. for example. HC Lev would remain the article title, but the lede is the expanded form--Львівське (говорити) 14:29, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, as a lead I find it good. And the article-name-can-of-worms we can open later.... Wild8oar (talk) 14:34, 1 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The web site is now online. Wild8oar (talk) 19:02, 2 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Acquired" date for Lev Poprad players

[edit]

In the roster there are 4 players which already played for Lev Poprad. They are listed as "acquired in 2011". However, I would argue that they have been transferred to Lev Praha just like from any other team and should be listed as "acquired in 2012" to be consistent with the notion that the 2 teams are distinct organizations. Wild8oar (talk) 11:57, 29 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

KHL lists them as transfers from Lev Poprad to Lev Praha: Кто куда: положение на 29 июня. Thus, I will change it. Wild8oar (talk) 08:59, 1 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Website online

[edit]

The official website is finally online. It can be found at levpraha.cz or hclev.cz --IJK_Principle (talk) 05:14, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article names

[edit]

Now that we have the official website online, there is also the official name given: HC LEV Praha [1]. So we can finally discuss the naming of this and related articles. I think the question consists of three parts:

  • HC: should this be included in the article name? I am against it, as it is not needed to disambiguate it from FC or other clubs of the same name.
  • LEV or Lev: as mentioned above, MOS:TM says that non-standard formatting in trademarks should be formatted according to English standard. Thus, Lev would be correct, but we can include the remark about "often stylized as LEV" in the intro sentence, as Lvivske has proposed above.
  • Praha: options are Praha, Prague or no city name. I vote for Praha, to make it consistent with the Slavia and Sparta articles.

Summary: my vote is for Lev Praha, with HC Lev redirecting to this article. The roster template should then be called Lev Praha roster and the HC Lev (2010–12) article could be moved to Lev Poprad to make it easier and consistent. Wild8oar (talk) 07:42, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My opinion, "HC" is not a wikipedia disambig thing, its part of the team name, just like with football teams who use FC even though there is obviously no HC or BC equivalent - if you say its a diambiguation thing, then why would they call themselves HC LEV everywhere? It's just part of the name. "Lev" is correct, you were right about the MOS on that. For city, I vote for "Praha"; Prague is never used so lets not even go there, and Praha seems to be the official part of the name (unlike other KHL teams) so I'm okay with including it. Thus, "HC Lev Praha" is my vote. --Львівське (говорити) 15:02, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at Kometa Brno article it also has a "HC" in the name although there is no football club. Although this can be a mistake, so I'm not certain whether to vote for HC Lev Praha or Lev Praha. Also Lev Prague or HC Lev Prague could be a possibility if the official website and press releases in English language will refer to the club as such (once there is an English version of official website plus some official English language press releases). One thing is certain: the official name has a "HC" in the name. --IJK_Principle (talk) 18:16, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought there are two options in my opinion: either use the full official name without omitting anything (HC Lev Praha) or use Lev (hockey club) or LEV (hockey club) since "HC" just means it's a hockey club (and can be omitted) and Prague is just a city of residence ((hockey club) is there since Lev is a disambig page). --IJK_Principle (talk) 18:28, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
"Lev (hockey club)" would be weird since its just a reordering of the syntax of "HC Lev" into a non-common-use format. Ditto for "Lev (hockey club)"; and LEV is a no-go per MOS as noted above.--Львівське (говорити) 21:06, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, Lev (hockey club) is not intuitive and doesn't make sense when HC Lev is the official name. So, I am also fine with HC Lev Praha. Should this be the name then? Or do we want to wait for an English version to see if they call it Lev Prague? Wild8oar (talk) 05:57, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Even if they did come up with an english version that used prague, I doubt it'd become the common use version vs. praha (like sparta). I say push through with it...don't think anyone else is involved with this article at this point.--Львівське (говорити) 06:01, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
OK then. Are you going to do the move, Lvivske? Wild8oar (talk) 06:28, 4 July 2012 (UTC) Update: I've done it myself now. Wild8oar (talk) 08:12, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gentlemen, there is a mistake in your thinking. We are on English part of wikipedia and Prague is the english translation of Praha. Look at the Sparta Praha (FOOTBALL page) (redirects to Sparta Prague) article on english wiki. It´s logical - nobody (in the english speaking world) knows Praha - they know Prague. The example with the HC Sparta Praha page is not very relevant - with all the respects - as HC Sparta is not internationally popular club (especially in the english world) so nobody cares they have bad name on english Wiki. Example: Look at the Spartak Moscow - what the english media are speaking about? - Spartak Moscow or (the local version) Спартак Москва? what do you think?;) They are speaking about Spartak Moscow (Moscow=the english version of Москва). Similar example you can see with Bayern Munich/München. Talking about the english version of Wikipedi - it sould be definitely HC Lev Prague. This discussion isn´t nothing new - similar diskussions were 1000x in other articles. You should follow this "best practice" and do it this way. Regards, Szalas PS.the HC Sparta Praha site should be moved to HC Sparta Prague as well — Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.39.70.195 (talk) 11:32, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If we translate Praha to Prague, would we not then translate Lev to Lion? The team calls itself Lev Praha on its English website and in all references to the club in English. Therefore, I say call the article "Lev Praha" but have "Lev Prague" as a re-direct. It could be even stated in the lede that, although the name of the city is Prague in English, the team officially uses "Praha" in English. Since the team has official English and Russian pages, I think we should use their naming conventions.109.107.200.146 (talk) 09:24, 12 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please, read one more time my argumentation. It is according to thousands of examples on english wiki (your opinion is nice but you should respect how the articles on Wiki are named). Praha = Prague. We could have names in Japanese symbols on english wiki but I think no-one would know about what they are - don´t you think? The fact that on the official page is it Praha doesn´t manner - it could be translated by the webmaster.
btw. look how english-speaking media refers about Lev (Prague!) HERE — Preceding unsigned comment added by 37.188.225.108 (talk) 16:17, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also, regarding "prague", i think we need to be weary of future 'english' pages that are just google translations. Should probably double check on english useage (like if they use it on their official social networks, or use it in graphics and the like and not just in a body of text). HC Donbass is a good example, they show how they have the english version right on their home page & have an english language logo variant. --Львівське (говорити) 21:07, 3 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

After moving this article, should we also move HC Lev (2010–12) to HC Lev Poprad to make it consistent and get rid of the ugly date range? I would say the date range format is only needed, if there are to clubs with the same name in the same city, such as the Winnipeg Jets or Dinamo Riga. Here the disambiguation via city name is much more intuitive. Wild8oar (talk) 08:51, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Go ahead and do that as well. If consensus is to include the city name (as in this case), I can't imagine that somebody would be against it. Right now the "(2010–12)" part is unnecessary. If someone protests, then they can start a new discussion should they wish to move it back. HeyMid (contribs) 19:12, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I voted to add the city name in this case because "HC LEV Praha" is the official name. AFAIK, the Slovak team was just called "HC Lev" (on their site, logo, etc.) and didn't include the city. --Львівське (говорити) 19:31, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see your point, but now that we've added the city name Praha to this article, I don't feel comfortable simply naming the other article "HC Lev", as it may confuse readers. Or should we assume that they know that is the official name of the Poprad team? At the very least I would, just as Wild8oar, like the date-range disambiguation removed from the title. Thanks for clarifying your vote BTW. HeyMid (contribs) 19:46, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
disambig page? or just send hc lev here, and have the hat note at the top; at the moment this team is still called "HC Lev" so its not like it cedes it to the folded team just because we moved it to add the city. that's just my take. --Львівське (говорити) 19:52, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If we should go by their official names, then yes; but from a reader's perspective, it may seem a bit confusing. I'm of the opinion that there should be some consistency in the titles (i.e. the City name included in both cases) to make it easier for readers to find the correct article. The latter should be applied IMO if/when we are agreed include the City name in the two titles, not official name. (For your note – by "disambiguation" I'm referring to the "(2010–12)" part of the title which is no longer necessary.) HeyMid (contribs) 20:30, 4 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
In principal, the official name is desirable, but HC Lev is confusing, as people would expect that to be the Prague team (even more so in the future, when Lev Poprad is only an anecdote from the past). So we need same disambiguation in the article name, which could be (2010–12) or Poprad. The latter is not only nicer, but also more intuitive, as the team is often also called Lev Poprad. Wild8oar (talk) 06:03, 5 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I am going to do the move now. I really don't see compelling reasons against it. Wild8oar (talk) 07:01, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Relevant to any following the page, but some want to change the team's name from HC Lev Praha to simply 'Lev Prague' - link --Львівське (говорити) 14:34, 22 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
