[edit]Hi Nick, re. this edit, are there other sources we can add to support the contention that Winckel (and everyone else by the look of it) was mistaken in believing he'd sunk the sub? It's just that the two sources for the altered sentences seem pretty unequivocal that the sub really was sunk -- doesn't mean they're right of course, only that they don't exactly support the article text as it now stands... Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 04:34, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
- @Crispulop and Ian Rose: sorry for the slow response here - for some reason the ping didn't appear until today! No Japanese submarines have been confirmed to have been sunk off the Australian east coast during the war, with the only 'possible' being I-178 which may have been sunk on 18 June 1943 off the north coast of NSW (see Convoy GP55). The attack referred to here appears to have been one of a large number of claimed sinkings off the East Coast during this period which have been disproved. I've added a reference to the leading (and only really) high quality work on the topic, which I should have done originally. Nick-D (talk) 10:10, 21 June 2017 (UTC)
