Confirmations needed - help especially needed from Bengali speakers
[edit]Checking is needed to confirm Banerjee's roles in several films and one play. Three of these confirmations could probably be done easily and quickly by a Bengali speaker. Many thanks in advance to anyone who provides the needed information below a bullet point where it is requested. Once I have needed info, I will transfer to the article:
- Done Banerjee's role in the film Sadhak Bamakhyapa (1958) might be obtained by looking at the first 3 minutes of credits on YouTube (linked in final column)
- Done - MOSTLY (SEE BELOW). Banerjee's role in the Vidyasagar films (1950, 1952) might be obtained the same way - presumably he had the same role in both language versions.
Here are two more challenging tasks that would also benefit by help from a Bengali speaker:
- It is unclear how to obtain Banerjee's role in Jugadebata (1950). He starred as Ramakrishna in a 1949 play by the same name, so it seems extremely likley that his role was Ramakrishna. However, confirmation is desirable. Perhaps this could be found in a Bengali-language theatre book. I have looked at several English-language theatre books without success, though my collection is not complete.
- It is unclear what role Banerjee performed in the 1977 play Rajadrohi, although Mukherjee's (1982) book records him as having performed in this play (see article grid for theatre). Perhaps this could be confirmed by an appropriate book, or by something online in Bengali script?
The grid below shows details and gives ONLINE links to check/confirm two of the films, which may be doable quite quickly. -- Presearch (talk) 08:29, 3 February 2013 (UTC); later edited again Presearch (talk) 05:25, 10 February 2013 (UTC)

Watched the whole film. Gurudas Banerjee was credited in cast, but the role name was not mentioned there. Sri Ramakrishna appears in the last 2 minutes of the film. --GDibyendu (talk) 13:22, 10 February 2013 (UTC)
One more comment on this: actor in Sri Ramakrishna's role looked exactly same as the actor in same role in Mahakavi Girishchandra, as a picture in page 9 of this document shows.--GDibyendu (talk) 13:40, 10 February 2013 (UTC) |
1952 | Vidyasagar | Sri Ramakrishna {needs confirmation, perhaps via extrapolation from 1950 film role} | Kali Prasad Ghosh | Hindi; CITWF Gomolo IMDB | This one seems to be Hindi dubbed-version of the 1950 Bengali film. Do we have a ref for that?--GDibyendu (talk) 13:22, 10 February 2013 (UTC) I don't. Please see note below re multilinguals vs dubbed versions --Presearch (talk) 03:49, 13 February 2013 (UTC) |
1958 | Sadhak Bamakhyapa | Done{help - Bengali-speaker please check youtube credits 0:00-3:00. What role did Banerjee play?} | Banshi Ash | Bengali; CITWF Gomolo |
Confirmed. In the casting itself (minute 1.06), it says Gurudas Banerjee is acting as the protagonist (in Bengali, Nam Bhumika-y).--GDibyendu (talk) 08:45, 10 February 2013 (UTC) |
1950 | Jugadebata | Sri Ramakrishna {needs confirmation, unclear how} | Bidhayak Bhattacharya | Bengali; mentioned in p. 84 of Guptoo (2011) as "based on the [life] of... saint Sri Ramkrishna Paramhansa" CITWF Gomolo |
Multilinguals versus dubbed versions
[edit]At present it is unclear whether the two Vidyasagar films, in Bengali (1950) and Hindi (1952), represent true multilinguals (separate filming) or whether the 1952 Hindi version is merely a dubbing of the 1950 version. Please see the note added above the table of films. It says we will explicitly note versions which are known as multilinguals, and will drop any dubbed versions (retaining only the original). Dropping dubs and retaining originals is what was done in the Encyclopaedia of Indian Cinema (1994), and it seems a sensible procedure.
At present, I am not aware of any solid information on whether the 1952 Hindi version is a dub versus a multilingual. Does anyone have a reference one way or the other? Barring solid information, I propose we leave both versions in the table, but without annotation. Thus their status is ambiguous, reflecting our lack of knowledge. -- Presearch (talk) 03:49, 13 February 2013 (UTC)
