Overly broad definition in lead?
[edit]It says a gun is "a device or ranged weapon designed to propel a projectile using pressure or explosive force". Wouldn't this include fragmentation grenades and claymore mines?
What if it was updated to say "propel a projectile from a barrel using pressure or explosive force"? Or, since maybe that wouldn't include weapons with a chamber but no barrel, "propel a projectile from a chamber using pressure or explosive force"? Oktayey (talk) 16:48, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- I first thought, I have no idea what "chamber" means in this context. ((I am not a gun expert, but one shouldn't have to be to read the article.) But then I realised that we haven't defined "barrel" either. Obviously not a wine barrel, but what is it? HiLo48 (talk) 22:55, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
- @HiLo48 The chamber of a gun is the place the initial explosion is contained, and the barrel is the tube the projectile accelerates through after leaving the chamber.
- Although practically all guns have a barrel, it is possible to cut a gun's barrel off and leave only the chamber, in which case I think it shouldn't cease to be called a gun. Oktayey (talk) 21:08, 23 October 2023 (UTC)
- Wow, you know your guns well! Theincredibleoctupus (talk) 20:17, 12 August 2024 (UTC)

Missing the forest for the trees?
[edit]The introduction never mentions that guns are a weapon, or intended to kill or injure. Perhaps something about their purpose and aims would be appropriate? 98.156.196.243 (talk) 05:00, 11 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yes. I'd also like it to say they are specifically designed for killing things, mostly people, but I doubt we'll ever reach that level of honesty. HiLo48 (talk) 00:24, 12 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think that would be good. Theincredibleoctupus (talk) 20:15, 12 August 2024 (UTC)
