However, he prohibits Friday, in his Will, from receiving any inheritance from him if she chooses to emigrate to the planet "Olympia", which the novel informs us is where the "supermen" went, indicating Baldwin broke from them at some point between the two stories

[edit]

How strongly is that last bit implied by the actual text (if not: original research!) and how does that exactly explain his proscription? He thinks Friday is a cut above the regular super people, and they do not deserve her? Or does he think it mis not good for superhuman to be amongst themselves?

I don't have the book handy, but as I recall it the actual text doesn't really say that he broke with them. That's just an inference from the fact that the supermen are not mentioned anywhere else in the books, despite them being a central part of Baldwin's life in the novella. The only reference is the passage in the will excluding her if she goes there, without saying why. Some other character mentions Olympia as being "where those 'supermen' went" (not an actual quote from the book, to be clear).
The only other reference to "Gulf" in "Friday" I recall is that Baldwin notes in a posthumous letter that Joe and Gail's DNA was used with many others in assembling Friday's DNA, so they are her ancestors in a sense. Baldwin also recommends that Friday read up on their actions saving the world, but I am not sure if it was in that letter or earlier. Cptbutton (talk) 17:17, 22 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
