I disagree that this topic should be merged with another topic. Guyana is a separate and distinct culture from the other states of the "Guyanas" and thus should have its own separate listing (which it does have a separate country listing). It is the only English speaking country in South America and has a strong West Indian heritage stemming from the British practice of importing Indian labor to work in the sugar and rice industries. This culture is unique and fascinating in its own right.
However, if the suggestion to merge this topic is intended to mean merging the "Guyana Shield" topic with the "Guyanas" topic, then it should be noted that the Guyana Shield is spread over nations that are not in fact part of the "Guyanas". The Guyana Shield is a distinguishable area of the South American landmass akin to Great Plains of North America, the Asian Steppe, or the Sahara Desert of Africa. It is a region of land that is topographically unique and crosses the borders of many countries.
The topic "Guyanas" however should deal only with the three countries that have historically made up the nations known as the Guianas. These countries are Guyana (English speaking former colony of the British), Suriname (Dutch speaking former colony of the Netherlands), and French Guiana (an overseas department of France).
This topic should be renamed "Guyana Shield" since it is directly linked to and referenced as such throughout the current database. Furthermore, this topic should be enhanced and expanded to include information about the topography, unique characteristics (one of the oldest land formations on earth), rich history (this is the fabled land of El Dorado, and the inspiration for Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's novel "The Lost World"), and breathtaking landmarks (Angel Falls and Kaieteur Falls being two of the more important).
- Originally this page was a redirect to Venezuela's Guayana region, then someone decided to create an article out of it, detailing that the term is the Spanish for Guyana/Guiana (as a region) and later on the spelling was changed so that the Spanish word was no longer used in the heading, even though the Spanish name is still the title. Whoever has been changing it has essentially mirrored the Guianas/Guyanas article (which is pointless). I've copied the information that wasn't repeated into the Guianas article and will now redirect this article to the Guayana region of Venezeula, since Guayana (with the "a" between the "u" and the "y") refers only to either the Spanish form of Guiana/Guyana or to Venezeuala's region. Since this is the English wikipedia then there is no need for this article with a Spanish title when there is already an article with the same scope that uses the terms found in English (Guianas/Guyanas), and as the only English use of this word is for Venezeuala's region, then this article will be redirected as such.72.27.85.108 19:59, 3 March 2007 (UTC)
- On that same basis, that Guayana refers only to the Spanish, I have made the disambiguation page refer only to the Sopanish, namely Venezuelan, entries that actually use the spelling. I have put the Guianas/Guyanas disambiguation page as a see also in case someone wants more or is uncertain of the spelling. My basis for this is that I was looking for Guayana City and got Guayana Region instead. --Bejnar 18:02, 10 June 2007 (UTC)
