John Winthrop was not a selectman of Groton

[edit]

It is not possible that Governor John Winthrop, who was the principle founder of Boston, was a selectman of Groton. Groton was settled in 1655, but Governor Winthrop died in Boston in 1649 and as a governor would not be the selectman of a then remote town in any case. Winthrop was a native of Edwardstone, England not Groton. However, it was Winthrop's youngest son Deane Winthrop (1623-1704), who was indeed born in Groton, that was involved in the project of settlement that became known as Groton, Massachusetts. Records indicate it was named Groton in honor of Deane's birthplace. This is confirmed by the Town's website. I have deleted the reference to John Winthrop. The Town website claims that Deane was an original selectman, but if so he was only a temporary resident as he lived his entire adult life in what is now Winthrop, Massachusetts.
