Maybe mention of the longstanding use of Gros Ventre as synonymous with Hidatsa, a Siouxian speaking tribe of North Dakota, should be made. Much historical and ethnographic literature uses the term Gros Ventre for the Hidatsa, who are not related to the tribe this page describes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.3.110.32 (talk) 17:16, 5 October 2016 (UTC)
Merger proposal
[edit]I propose that A'aninin be merged into Gros Ventre people. These are two articles about the same tribe. While A'aninin is the autonym, Gros Ventre is the more common name, especially in an English-language Wikipedia. It's also the term used on the tribe's official website: [1]. -Uyvsdi (talk) 02:34, 24 October 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- From some quirks in the article, it appears A'aninin was cut-and-pasted from the original Gros Ventre people article in July 2011. -Uyvsdi (talk) 02:43, 24 October 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi
- Support. Seems pretty clear-cut to me that they should be merged. And "Gros Ventre" seems to clearly be the more common English name, so A'aninin should be merged into this article. --Miskwito (talk) 09:08, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
- Have finished the merge. -Uyvsdi (talk) 00:47, 2 November 2011 (UTC)Uyvsdi
Move discussion in progress
[edit]There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Chipewyan people which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. —RMCD bot 09:45, 12 March 2014 (UTC)
Requested move
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the move request was: Move. This issue may be worth discussing on a wider scale as Kwamikagami suggests. Cúchullain t/c 21:07, 31 March 2014 (UTC)
Gros Ventre people → Gros Ventre – target is a dab page created as "Gros Venture (disambiguation)" by Cosmic Penguin on Jan 27 2008 [sic] with Gros Ventres as the people title, then corrected by Kim Dent-Brown. Then "Gros Ventre (disambiguation)" was moved to "Gros Ventre" by Kwami on Jan 15 2011 then turned into a redirect to "Gros Ventre people" by Uysvdi on Nov 2 2011, citing "moving disambiguation info back to disambiguation page, redirecting to WP:Primarytopic, as almost all links to this page refer to the people"] then restored to disambiguation on the same day by the same editor then restored to a redirect on same day by same editor. Gros Ventre (disambiguation) exists and everything on it devolved from the name of this people, so the target should be the people title as per the redirect. - Oppose until the issue is addressed properly. These should be discussed at a centralized location.
- There was a discussion once on whether the ethnicity should have precedence for the name, and it was decided it shouldn't. That could be revisited. But it really should be one discussion on the principle, not thousands of separate discussions at every ethnicity in the world over whether it should be at "X", "Xs", or "X people". — kwami (talk) 12:53, 20 March 2014 (UTC)
- Support per nom. An identified people should be the primary topic of a term absent something remarkable standing in the way. bd2412 T 02:31, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
- Support as per the policy Wikipedia:Article titles#Use commonly recognizable names and the guideline Wikipedia:Naming conventions (ethnicities and tribes). The section Wikipedia:Article titles#Precision also applies given that Gros Ventre redirects here. There is no need to redo any guideline as it already supports the un-disabiguated title. CambridgeBayWeather (talk) 04:42, 22 March 2014 (UTC)
- Support per CambridgeBayWeather. In cases where the requested move simply eliminates the word "people", and the destination title is already a simple redirect to the current title, it is clear that guidelines favoring both precision and conciseness support the move. Xoloz (talk) 17:25, 30 March 2014 (UTC)
- The above discussion is preserved as an archive of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on this talk page or in a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.
