I'm not sure about "low" importance. Nor am I entirely convinced that the VCH really took much interest in the parish, though there was probably a compulsion to get words about it on to pages. For example, the VCH asserts that two hamlets called Upper and Lower Chilworth - by, presumably, the 1770s, had "long disappeared". Perhaps they had, - they certainly can't be traced now - but if so, no-one told the census enumerators of 1831. It turns out that, in all probability, a maternal great-grandfather of mine was born in Upper Chilworth in 1826, the son of someone I must take to have been an agricultural labourer. My guess would be that local agricultural changes probably displaced a very significant number of people in the late eighteen twenties and early eighteen thirties hereabouts. Perhaps many of them hoofed it into Oxford, and did for a living , in the immortal words of Damon Runyon, the best they could, while the local worthies of the city complained about the poor. The crude census figures for south Oxfordshire bear this out - as indeed do the riots over the failed attempt to enclose Otmoor, somewhat to the north, of the early eighteen thirties. Not much use having a fine and well maintained church, with a nice set of bells, if the landlords have driven out the majority of the parishioners. Funny sort of local history, all round. I hope someone eventually will be able to do better, but I'm a long way away ( my Chilworth great-grandfather ended up in Manchester) and I can't do it myself.Delahays (talk) 12:05, 29 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
