The anonymous addition without indicating a source that the canal was built by Gulag prisoners cannot be verified. The Great Soviet Encyclopedia has "a citizen volunteer force of 160,000 collective farm workers." (ok, they would probably not write about the Gulag). However, a detailed study by Christian Teichmann: "Macht der Unordnung. Stalins Herrschaft in Zentralasien 1920-1950" (Power of disorder. Stalin's rule in Central Asia 1920-1950), Hamburger Edition, Hamburg 2016, ISBN978-3-86854-298-1, has an extra section on pages 214–220 titled "Massenmobilisierung: Usman Jusupow und der Große Ferghanakanal, 1937-1939" (Mass mobilization: Usman Yusupov and the Great Ferghana Canal, 1937-1939). Teichmann describes how mass mobilization of collective farm workers was a central principle for Yusupov's intentions to improve the irrigation in Usbekistan. This contradicts the assertion that the canal was built by Gulag prisoners. I therefore undid that unverifiable edit regarding the Gulag prisoners. --Bjs (talk) 08:59, 9 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
