There is no "confusion" between Guildford and Midland in signage - look carefully! Also the traffic lights in Mundaring do exist! Northam is long way after that Need to try again!User:SatuSuro 13:06, 28 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I went to York and back on 2006-05-28.....and to my surprise there were the traffic lights at Mundaring! I went by the 2003 UBD Street Directory on the subject of the lights. According to it there were no lights there, so I presume that they were put in between 2002 and now. I also made the edit on 2006-05-27, before the trip when I discovered there were actually lights.--M Johnson (talkcontribs) 07:56, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You dont have it that bad, there are people who have never been to Indonesia or Java doing work on the Merapi and Earthquake articles, it is disturbing to say the least when they use search engines to determine "local knowledge" - at least you could drive through the lights. Also, current road maps are the only ones ever worth using, and I could drag you through innacuracies in them even - the map makers no longer spend the money on sending out people to check things aerial/satelite photography caannot always pick up!User:SatuSuro 12:12, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do live in Perth. I also live in the hills region, so I know about Great Eastern Highway. And the lights subject was only a mistake.--M Johnson (talkcontribs) 00:15, 7 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re-reading this art the '"value for money" sentence could be seen to be rubbish for anyone who regularly uses the hill - wide loads holding up kms of traffic almost daily, and the legendary double trucks more or less closing the left lane on a twisting turning descent at peak traffic time: if there are alternative plans for the hill, a ref or link is needed! User:SatuSuro 02:28, 9 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The entry about the arrester bed failed to mention the one that was removed eariler, also there is no evidence that the arrester bed has been used since it's placement. Other than by joyriders in stolen cars. The Mundairng traffic light where set up in 2004.(unsigned comment)

There have been heavy vehicles towed out of the arrester bed within the last two years - all the stolen cars get abandoned on the uphill side of the highway -approximately 2 a month at this stage (the descent side has had no abandoned or stolen cars in 4 years at least) - User:SatuSuro 15:58, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Comments, suggestions

[edit]

The last sentence of the lead section is "Though planning began in the 1970s, as of 2012, there are no plans to construct this route." If nothing has changed, it might be worth updating "2012" to "February 2014". Likewise Great_Eastern_Highway#Future finishes with "As of June 2012, ...", which could possibly be updated.

Per Template:As of documentation, the date should be the date of the source, not the current date, month or year. While there's probably been no change, I can't find any information to reliably say one or the other since 2012. - Evad37 [talk] 05:12, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The sentence strikes me as self-contradictory. If planning began in the 1970s, it would follow that there are plans, albeit perhaps not complete. A possible alternative would, I suppose, be that planning began, but all plans were somehow lost. This is unlikely. I will change the sentence to remedy this problem, as follows: "Though planning began in the 1970s, as of 2012, construction of this route has not begun." . If my change is not accurate, anyone can of course further correct it. Terry Thorgaard (talk) 19:39, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Planning for the route alignment has been going on since the 1970s, but there are no current plans to construct the route. To avoid the confusion between these two types of planning, I've reworded the sentence to "Though planning began in the 1970s, as of 2012, construction of this route has not been scheduled, and it is not considered a priority" (matching the info in the 'Future' section). - Evad37 [talk] 09:08, 17 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great_Eastern_Highway#Route_description includes "The lowest volume was 850 average vehicles per day ...". This probably means "the section with the lowest average number of vehicles" rather than "850 average vehicles, plus xxx above-average and yyy below-average vehicles", but it's probably worth rewording the sentence to make it clear. This is especially the case when the last half of that sentence explicitly talks about heavy vehicles, so perhaps the "850 average vehicles" might be average weight vehicles and not include the 40.2% heavy vehicles.

Clarified its an average of 850 vehicles per day. - Evad37 [talk] 05:12, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great_Eastern_Highway#Route_description includes the expression "Casualty crash rates", but what does that mean? Is it fatalities or injuries? Casualty (person) tells us that "casualty" includes non-fatal, but is sometimes loosely used to mean "fatalities". The ref's use of both "fatalities" and "casualty crashes" doesn't help - "an increase in overall fatalities ... but a decrease in overall casualty crashes" could mean that each "casualty crash" is one crash, some of which killed more than one person, or it could mean a crash in which someone was injured but not killed.

I found the report mentioned in the ref, which does have a definition of casualty crash, and is now in the article as a footnote. - Evad37 [talk] 05:12, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article uses "xxx-kilometre-long" in several places; in most the word "long" is unnecessary, and "xxx-kilometre" would suffice and be slightly easier to read.

Of the four uses, I changed two, but felt the other two were better off as they are. - Evad37 [talk] 05:12, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great_Eastern_Highway#Upgrades_and_improvements includes "... Gillard opened the upgraded highway on 28 March 2013, ... The upgrade is expected to reduce congestion along the highway". It's been 10 months since then - do we know whether the upgrade did reduce congestion? Can we update that sentence accordingly?

I haven't found any reliable info, but updated "is" to "was". - Evad37 [talk] 05:12, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

But otherwise the article is excellent. Mitch Ames (talk) 14:44, 1 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Article

[edit]

Is it "Great Eastern Highway" or " THE Great Eastern Highway" ? I tentatively added the article at the beginning, but wasn't surprised to see it reverted soon. Only I was disappointed in the motivation "for consistency". Consistency with what? I tried to find some peer examples, and found The M40 motorway for just one example, and The M25 motorway for another. I searched for previous discussion but couldn't find any - can't pretend I searched really in depth, though. Further discussion welcome, edit/revert wars carefully avoided! Jan olieslagers (talk) 16:57, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]

By consistency, I meant within the article itself, when roads are mentioned. Internal consistency is required (usually) for higher quality articles. But in any case, "The" is not part of the actual name (eg refs 2, 4, 6, 77, 78) and does not need to be used - for example ref 51 has "... it enables the Roe Highway traffic to flow freely over Great Eastern Highway...", and see the titles of refs 61, 62, 68. - Evad37 [talk] 17:33, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmppf, that sounds like the article does conform to local linguistical practice, queer as it sounds. I would gladly work over all the article to add the the article (yes yes, this wording is confusing, sorry, I can't do any better) but if authorative external references do the same abhorrency then I better rest my case. 't Wasn't a casus belli really, anyway... Ils sont fous, ces Australiens... Jan olieslagers (talk) 17:40, 16 June 2014 (UTC)[reply]
