This article must adhere to the biographies of living persons (BLP) policy, even if it is not a biography, because it contains material about living persons. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately from the article and its talk page, especially if potentially libellous. If such material is repeatedly inserted, or if you have other concerns, please report the issue to this noticeboard. If you are a subject of this article, or acting on behalf of one, and you need help, please see this help page. |

The contentious topics procedure applies to this page. This page is related to gender-related disputes or controversies or people associated with them, which has been designated as a contentious topic. This article should adhere to the gender identity guideline because it contains material about one or more trans women. Precedence should be given to self-designation as reported in the most up-to-date reliable sources, anywhere in article space, even when it doesn't match what's most common in reliable sources. Any person whose gender might be questioned should be referred to by the pronouns, possessive adjectives, and gendered nouns (for example "man/woman", "waiter/waitress", "chairman/chairwoman") that reflect that person's latest expressed gender self-identification. Some people go by singular they pronouns, which are acceptable for use in articles. This applies in references to any phase of that person's life, unless the subject has indicated a preference otherwise. Former, pre-transition names may only be included if the person was notable while using the name; outside of the main biographical article, such names should only appear once, in a footnote or parentheses. If material violating this guideline is repeatedly inserted, or if there are other related issues, please report the issue to the LGBTQ+ WikiProject, or, in the case of living people, to the BLP noticeboard. |
Reinstatement of removed sources
[edit]I removed a bunch of sources a while back because of WP:OVERCITE. I've just removed them again, this time from the Further reading section. If any of those sources do in fact contain some unique, useful information then feel free to add it back into the body of the article but, failing that, they add nothing wherever they are placed. We are not an indiscriminate collection of links etc: as with External links, Further reading should exist to allow the reader to expand upon what our article says. - Sitush (talk) 19:32, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
- You said they add nothing, not I. I think they add depth of perspective about the person's notability, importance, history, activities, and ample press coverage in current events. It is far from indiscriminate, because each one mentions the subject of the article in the context of what makes them notable and important. I am happy to work on incorporating that information, but there is no prohibition on a further reading section including content that could be added later. I'll be adding them back now. If you'd like to improve the article using their content, feel free to! If you can demonstrate any individual link doesn't contain further information relevant to the subject, please remove that individual link (there are none). In the future, complaining that Dalit people lack notability, and them simultaneously removing further reliable sources for readers to discover, sends a message that does not compute. Cheers, Jake Ocaasi t | c 20:00, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
- Wrong. We're not interested in depth of coverage re: notability - they're notable or they are not. Ditto for importance, history etc. I am honestly at a loss - our modus operandi is being usurped in the interest of furthering an agenda, and it is being usurped by someone who should know better. I haven't said that Dalit people lack notability, have I? Where did I do that? Put up or shut up. - Sitush (talk) 20:17, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
- Further reading sections are often useful because not everything should be included in an encyclopedic entry. For example, a link to an article or book that discussed discrimination against transgender people in India would work well in this article. Unfortunately the articles in this further reading section are mostly news stories that merely repeat what is already here and are, in the main, unnecessary. --regentspark (comment) 21:29, 18 July 2017 (UTC)

- Indeed. I use FR sections for that type of purpose. - Sitush (talk) 21:34, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
- I think each article adds a different perspective or detail or quote or protest action or government response--there is a narrative to her activism that unfolds over time. Since there seems to be a high level of objection to this additional sourcing as further reading, I'll integrate unique details from the further reading section into the article. It will take a week or so. Cheers, Ocaasi t | c 20:14, 20 July 2017 (UTC)

Finishing school
[edit]There is something not right about This kind of untouchability based on both her caste and gender identity caused her to attempt suicide and give up on the idea of finishing school.
Is this the US meaning of "school", which in India would be a college or university? How did she get a place at engineering college and a diploma if she didn't finish school? I'm having problems seeing the source at the moment, sorry - it was ok a few days ago. - Sitush (talk) 19:38, 18 July 2017 (UTC)
- Indeed she was a plus-two dropout, say the sources. The further readings clarify how she got from Anna University into her engineering program. I'll clarify that over the next week. Thanks for pointing out an ambiguity. Indeed, I meant school as pre-university education, but I can see how that would be unclear in an Indian or international context. Staff account misuse, apologies
[edit]I'm sorry that I have again forgotten to switch accounts while editing this article as a volunteer. It's confusing to remember two separate Wikipedia identities and I quickly reverted and re-instated the changes from my non-staff account. I will try not to do this again, because there is no WMF involvement in this article or the Dalit History month campaign. Cheers and thanks for your patience, Jake Ocaasi t | c 20:05, 20 July 2017 (UTC)
- No worries but it is odd, then, that someone from the WMF commented at Wikipedia talk:Meetup/Dalit History Month 2017. Perhaps that was an accidental log-out issue, too. - Sitush (talk) 04:21, 21 July 2017 (UTC)

- @Sitush: You are right about mentioning dalit and transgender activism on lead, but not other edits. "She quit the job due to discrimination" was correct representation of the DNA source which said "Banu had to quit working after she faced discrimination at her workplace." Also "Electrical and Electronics engineering student" is incorrect, it is "Electrical and Electronics Engineering (EEE) department." I have also removed some other unsourced statements that constituted WP:OR. I am afraid, there is much that needs to be checked here. Raymond3023 (talk) 05:14, 10 January 2018 (UTC)
Sourcing
[edit]I have just reverted a large expansion that seemed to rely a lot on a couple of very obscure websites - campusvibes was one of them. I don't think it is a good idea to use anything less than main news websites when it comes to BLPs such as this one. I know that my revert took out some other new statements, eg: there was one about her being guru of a jamaat, which sounds trivial, and there was quite a bit about some court case or another, which may not be trivial but I'm wary of it because activists and politicians in India seem to use the legal system as an extension of their campaigns/PR etc. It probably needs some discussion here. - Sitush (talk) 15:22, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
This was one of the other sources used. Of course, New Indian Express is mainstream but it is tabloid-like and I think we were misrepresenting the breathless prose in saying that Banu had "adopted" various people. The way we did it made it sound like a legal adoption but it isn't. I'm not sure how best to deal with it. - Sitush (talk) 15:34, 10 February 2018 (UTC)
