samples

[edit]

does he pay for all the samples he uses? can you make money selling songs when you have to pay 50 people before releasing an album? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.11.216.53 (talk) 02:16, 1 November 2007 (UTC) he doesnt pay, thats why its on illegal art —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.74.188.239 (talk) 08:29, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think there are some issues/loopholes with sampling because he isn't using them as they were originally intended/in their original context so there's a certain allowance for creative liberties here. Also I think many artists don't mind him sampling them because he gives them wide exposure. Kristina Chin (talk) 00:33, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

big butt pirate?

[edit]

is this bogus?? 75.179.42.243 01:47, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I talked to him after a show on 5/19/07, and asked him if his next album was going to be called "'Big Butt' something". He looked at me like I was crazy and said, "No..." So, yes, I have no idea where this information was coming from. Nhahmada 16:40, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

LOL That's hilarious! Trust me - it's coming and it will BLOW YOUR MIND! Nobody is supposed to know yet, Greg was probably freaked it leaked. Sounds like he played it off well though. It'll be here. --Donkeylips 15:31, 23 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Just curious--how do you know about this stuff, Donkeylips? Nhahmada 22:35, 30 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

This is retarded, and old. There no such album. He just came out with his newest album, Feed the Animals. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.31.248.215 (talk) 18:01, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently the world was not ready for Big Butt Pirate, but it is still in the pipeline and it is still going to BLOW YOUR MIND. #4 album of the year? No, we are talking #1, #2 and #3. Be ready. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.120.182.223 (talk) 05:08, 5 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're thinking of the upcoming NIN album, Butt Fuck Parlor Time.Kaleja (talk) 00:00, 23 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The long delayed and oft rumored about Big Butt Pirate is finally scheduled for release May 1st, 2010. Get Ready. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.3.186.155 (talk) 16:01, 20 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

It's going to be released March 16. No, wait, April 1. Or, wait, I mean May 1. For sure this time.
Here's the deal: if you want to add this supposed album to the article (with or without a date), we're gonna need a source. - SummerPhD (talk) 05:10, 8 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pittsburgh

[edit]

He's "from" Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Anyone know whether this is just where he lives now, or whether he grew up there? (He will often refer to Pittsburgh sports teams at the end of his performances.) 71.246.25.5 04:25, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

he lives there now. He lived for a brief time in Cleveland, Ohio when he was attending Case Western Reserve University, but he moved back to Pittsburgh to (i believe) hold down a biomedical lab job while he did his music on the side. I haven't confirmed this, but it wouldn't be difficult to.

He was born and raised in Pittsburgh. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Michael Ray (talkcontribs) 22:01, 15 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

?

[edit]

he is often seen jumping up and down, half naked, and girating around his laptop. uh? --Melaen 18:29, 20 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently his live show is somewhat notorious. --Delirium 07:59, 21 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, it certainly is. 71.246.25.5 04:25, 23 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

mashup

[edit]

He's said in a recent pitchfork interview that he's not a big fan of the mashup scene. Maybe the article shouldn't call him a mashup artist.

But that's what he is, no? Note, Philip Glass doesn't claim his music is minimalist but his article makes light of his minimalist style as well as his claim regarding it. --Anthony5429 07:06, 24 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

he definitely heavily employs mash-up styles to his music, but he does it slightly differently in the fact that he uses over a dozen songs usually to create original 3 or 4 minute individual tracks. Often, mash-ups are just one song played over another, which I'm assuming is what he is referring to when he says he isnt a fan of the mash-up scene. however, his music is almost entirely made up of mash-ups, though used in a unique fashion, he is still a mash-up artist. Dell

[edit]

"His computer is a Dell." What's the point of this line? It seems really out of place.

Also, this is anecdotally inaccurate. I distinctly noticed a Toshiba when I saw him in Madison

  • Then why didn't one of you guys simply delete it? - Ghostalker

According to this article http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=721723&category=ARTS&TextPage=2, he uses a Panasonic Toughbook with a Dell as backup in case the F.B.I. confiscates it. 129.2.194.132 (talk) 00:54, 21 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

DJ?

[edit]

Technically, since he doesn't use vinyls/any sort of turntable, he shouldn't be labeled as a "DJ". I think that the Illegal Art webpage even has a Girltalk shirt for sale that says "I'm not a DJ". Would anybody mind if I removed the term "DJ" from the page? I didn't want to change everything without asking somebody elses opinion —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.65.242.24 (talk) 04:52, August 28, 2007 (UTC)

Comment: While he isn't a DJ, i like to call him a DJ when describing him to people who have not heard his music before. I try to get everyone to listen to him, and what he does is very similar to what a DJ does. So if Wiki calls him a DJ, i think thats cool because people who have not heard him before often check wiki to learn about him. 72.77.116.79 (talk) 06:47, 7 December 2010 (UTC)Dimruby (aka Gregory)[reply]

Regardless of the fact that calling him a DJ may make it easier to describe his music, he is NOT a DJ, and he has said so himself numerous times. As such I am removing it. If people come here looking for information about him, they should not receive false information simply because it might make it easier for them to get an idea of what he might sound like. If they don't know what the genres listed mean, they can click on the hyperlinks and find out. I find the idea that an article should be intentional incorrect in order to possibly help ignorant people incredibly offensive. 99.92.179.104 (talk) 01:55, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Picture

[edit]

Are you guys sure that the picture was taken in Paris?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.35.231.2 (talk) 08:58, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He really doesn't look anything like that picture anymore. Maybe a new one can be found? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.240.176.214 (talk) 21:23, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think that picture is pretty special and should be kept. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.230.74.242 (talk) 21:06, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That picture brilliantly captures Girl Talk. It should be kept.

I kinda like the picture I put up, with him looking all grizzled and sweaty. That old photo is pretty funny. It's a hard call. I get what you're saying about adding picture, not replacing them.Gwazda (talk) 06:48, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I get that the picture is special, but for the mere fact that he looks nothing like that anymore, I think another more recent picture should be added. (I wouldnt know how to go about uploading a new one) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.31.248.215 (talk) 18:04, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I guess someone uploaded a new pic. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.31.248.215 (talk) 18:07, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, but the new picture is worse than the old one IMO. The musician's face that's the topic of the page is out of focus.

Is the second picture really of Girl Talk, or is it of Jonathan Snipes from Captain Ahab? 21122012 (talk) 22:19, 15 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Performances?

[edit]

I'm really confused about Girl Talk's performances...does he just play songs on his computer? Or does anyone know if he actually mixes them while he's playing them? Or are they new mixes? I think this should be noted.

Wikifried (talk) 20:30, 14 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

He uses adobe audition to make his music but when he plays live he uses audio mulch to construct and put together tracks in real time. He'll play samples from his albums and sometimes mix them with newer song. Kinda like taking a deck of cards and spreading them out and mixing them, with genius skill. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.31.248.215 (talk) 17:57, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

how bout a criticism section?

[edit]

Gillis rips other people's music. I forget whom, but I read that he is the centerpiece of many different lawsuits concerning copyright infringement. We need a section detailing this. - tbone (talk) 00:15, 7 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The article quotes New York Times' speculation, but I haven't read anything about him being sued. You are right though, in implying that any lawsuit brought against Gillis whatsoever would be undeniably worth following here. Goth Fatty X (talk) 02:51, 20 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Unstoppable release date

[edit]

According to Amazon and allmusic.com, Unstoppable was released in 2006, not 2004. Is there evidence to the contrary? TWCarlson (talk) 02:45, 9 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Engineering Career

[edit]

This article states that he left his job as an engineer, but the source is simply an interview with him in which he states that he has seriously considered leaving his job. Is there a source that confirms that he is committed to his music 100%? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Froomster (talkcontribs) 03:01, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have an online citation, but that is what is stated at the end of RiP!. You can download it for free and jump to the where are they now section which is at the end. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.182.116.58 (talk) 06:24, 30 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm a PC commercial

[edit]

I think I saw Girl Talk in the new "I'm a PC" commercial. He's the guy with the bandanna and the beard who says "I'm a PC and I play the PC"... I think... I was wondering if anyone else could confirm that that's him and if it should be mentioned in the article. --Pierce123ok (talk) 08:34, 6 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I looked around a little. The closest guy I found was in this ad at 14 seconds in. Not really close though... --Travis Thurston+ 04:06, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Nah that's not the one. It's the one where the pc guy starts off by saying "I'm a pc, and I may do things you consider boring". I'm pretty sure girl talks in there. I'll try to find a vid. Pierce123ok (talk) 04:27, 7 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I saw it last night! Funny that it is the same scene with the girl in the bed again. Except now he has that beard and headband and all. Still no youtube video though. --Travis Thurston+ 16:40, 8 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Your answer: YouTube Girl Talk --Travis Thurston+ 03:33, 10 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

The All Day link in the discography actually redirects to Adrian Peterson. I've removed the redirect.--NotoriousTF (talk) 12:00, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

New Main Photo

[edit]

Greg Gillis looks nothing like that anymore. Whether or not it is "funny" or "ironic" is irrelevant; it is outdated information. Can anyone upload a non-copyrighted photo of him that has been taken in the past 1-2 years? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.7.199.61 (talk) 05:12, 27 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dispute over infobox photo

[edit]

I see two editors who seem to disagree about which image should be included in the infobox. Can we discuss this here instead of getting into a revert war? Thanks! BusterD (talk) 15:53, 2 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

My opinion is that the DriveByBoredom picture is worse because the subject (GirlTalk) is out of focus. The focus is on the cake in his hand. I'd rather the old grainy photo be used instead (although I didn't make the change). What I would like better is a updated photo that has the musician's face in focus.

Music actually creative commons licensed?

[edit]

I can't find any reliable source from Girl Talk himself, or his label, indicating that all his music (if any) are creative commons licensed. Perhaps reference of the creative commons license should be removed, as so far, this article is the most official reference of such thing. Balupton (talk) 13:03, 22 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

This source labels his AllDay album as being licensed under CC. It's not an independent source, but the subject is far past the bar for notability, so some connected sources can be used. This unimpeachable source describes a documentary depicting the story of the subject and highlighting his use of CC. This source is also very reliable, and discusses the subject's use of CC. None of these are recent, but they were three of the top five Google hits for "girl talk creative commons." Not exactly hard to find. BusterD (talk) 16:43, 22 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
