What's with the grammar on this page? Many parts are gramatically incorrect.

well, that's why you're free to edit and correct instead of complaining... by the way, it's GRAMMATICALLY not GRAMATICALLY.

Giovanni's mother ancestry

[edit]

Giovanni's mother is not Afro-Mexican, and therefore I'm gonna remove that. I've seen her many times and if you want to profile her on an specif race or ethnic group, it has to be Euro-Mexican, because the women is very white. Giovanni and his brothers clearly took their skin color from his father. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 189.146.74.213 (talk) 19:45, 9 December 2006 (UTC).[reply]

  • Who said she's Afro-Mexican? That category is there for Giovanni, because he is Mexican and has African ancestry, passed down by his dad, regardless of where he's originally from. -- Lancini87 01:48, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, nevermind, i just noticed you were actually talking about the article and not the category. -- Lancini87 01:51, 20 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question

[edit]

It is probably unpropre to ask this (because of all these strict wikilaws) but could someone do a favour and add a picture of "Giova" in Finnish (Suomi) Giovanni dos Santos wikipage?

Barcelona

[edit]

Are Giovanni's appearances and goals for FC Barcelona displayed correctly in the article? It seems to say he's had 9 goals on 12 appearences (or viceversa) for the Spanish club. I wonder if this is true at all. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 201.148.15.22 (talk) 11:29:08, August 19, 2007 (UTC)

He certainly has not appeared 9 times and scored 12 in competitive games, much less in league games. As of right now he has played in 1 league game, failing to score, and has not played in any other competitions for the first team. His Barcelona B stats, however, are certainly different. I just added a table for all of his matches, but it doesn't include Barca B. So if anyone can find those stats and wants to add it to the table, that would be great. Isaiah 20:02, 5 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

He scored in a champions league match, so his total is more than three, plus the ones he scored in asia in 2007..........

Barca B stats

[edit]

Shouldn't be added to the infobox. This is now a reserve team and we do not record reserve stats in the infobox. Govvy (talk) 21:08, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Moving from Monterrey to Barcelona

[edit]

This article says nothing of how Giova got to play for Barcelona. As I don't have that information, I can't edit the article, but I think it is something that should be mentioned. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 200.124.48.123 (talk) 21:30, 29 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Giovani Is A Tottenham Player.

[edit]

The official website of FCB states that the player has been moved to England. Please, allow someone to fix this. It is wrong to simply delete information that its proof is found 2 clicks away. הגמל התימני (talk) —Preceding comment was added at 11:38, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As the Barcelona website says on his transfer to Tottenham, "an agreement for the transfer of Giovani Dos Santos" - therefore, he hasn't yet joined Tottenham and so isn't a Tottenham player and still Barcelona. Mattythewhite (talk) 12:02, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It's only a matter of time until it is 100% official, as all news sites, including Barcelona's mention that he will sign, meaning, he is going to be a Tottenham player 100% surely. It's like not writing about CL 2009 final because it hasn't happened yet. הגמל התימני (talk) 13:43, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Exactly - he will sign, but he hasn't yet. It is only a matter of time, but that time has not yet arrived. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:47, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
So why was it written that Guardiola will be Barca's coach, when the season was still going? And I once again want to point out future projects and event that we have written about in Wikipedia. Why do they get attention, and not Giovani's transfer? הגמל התימני (talk) 13:51, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There's no problem with it being written that something is going to happen, of course, for example, it needs to be mentioned on Giovani's article that a fee has been agreed for his transfer and that it is subject to a medical and agreeing personal terms. It is important that this is mentioned, as these are the facts, so there is attention being given to Giovani's proposed transfer. Mattythewhite (talk) 13:56, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Tottenham Have Now Officiall Confirmed on there website that he has joined Tottenham and has agreed Personal Terms and Completed A Medical [1] —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.69.39.210 (talk) 14:09, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yup - now he has completed his move - the article should be updated so. Mattythewhite (talk) 14:13, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You And What If Someone disputes it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.69.39.210 (talk) 14:18, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt anyone will - the deal has been completed, and so is now a Tottenham player. The only reason why it was disputed was because the move was not 100%, but now it is. Quite strange this conversation took place just before the move was completed... Thanks, Mattythewhite (talk) 14:22, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Told ya ;). Anyway, a similar problem exists here: Tim Borowski so I suggest you go and delete that info there too :P. הגמל התימני (talk) 16:48, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
What you "told me" before was incorrect then, but is now correct as the move has gone through. Seem to be struggling to get your head round that. Mattythewhite (talk) 16:57, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It has been correct for several days. Seem to be struggling to get your head round that. הגמל התימני (talk) 17:27, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Several days ago, he was a Barcelona player as his move to Tottenham has not yet been completed and was still waiting for him to pass a medical and agree personal terms. Therefore, "it" has not been correct for several days. Anyway, it doesn't matter now - the move has been completed and the page now needs unprotecting. Mattythewhite (talk) 17:30, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Age?

[edit]

I didnt see any reference to what his best positions are or what foot he plays with.

Dos capitalized.

[edit]

the Spurs website has it wrong, it should be capitalized. Govvy (talk) 21:03, 1 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Why should it be capitalised? Gerardo dos Santos, Éder dos Santos and Jonathan dos Santos are not capitalised. None of the other notable dos Santos have a capital D. --ClubOranjeT 07:41, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Only in title should it be capitalized. And Dos should be capped if starting a sentence with the Surname. It is a bit strange, because dos was only used between surname and first name to imply protection of a family member in the event of the father dieing. Although that was a difference between Portugese and Spanish customs, but it's never been totally clarified. However it might be a different naming convention to what I know. But as he is Mexican it might be closer to what I learned from my Spanish ancestry. Govvy (talk) 21:57, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I agree it should be capitalised when starting a sentence, but not in the title. To my mind it is generally per the "van" in dutch, "von" in german, "de" in French, ie with a lower case letter, and generally seems to be explained that way in various articles on the subject. Not that I have any particular expertise myself in Spanish surname idiosyncrasies. --ClubOranjeT 00:05, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ipswich sub-heading

[edit]

I have tried to add a sub heading in the playing career part that clearly focuses on his spell with Ipswich Town. Yet, someone keeps removing it, which is getting incredibly annoying now, as it is without doubt that he was on loan at Ipswich. Does this not count as valid to someone? Loan spells certainly warrant a sub-heading, because you only have to look at other articles. For example; on the Henrik Larsson page, there is a sub-heading for his loan spell at Manchester United. The Lee Martin page clearly highlights all of his loan spells, whilst the Amr Zaki page also has a clear sub-heading for his loan spell with Wigan. So why can Giovani dos Santos not have a sub-heading for his spell at Ipswich? Its a farce. (Just-an-Ipswich-fan (talk) 21:29, 27 July 2009 (UTC))[reply]

One paragraph doesn't need a sub heading, besides, he is under contract at Spurs, leave it in the Spurs section. Govvy (talk) 18:09, 28 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(continuation of original post)... this one both say that the TOTAL deal is for £8.6million. They also say the Tottenham paid "£4.7 million initially" ("£4.7 million up front"in the other article). In Inglish, this is clearly deciphered as being a part of the £8.6 million, not additional to. By all means SOCCERWAY is a library of World-wide soccer .....

Any person with a competent level of English would interpret the soccerway source as saying the deal is worth a total of 8.6M and that the 4.7M is part of the 8.6M. Note that the word "initially" never appeared before 8.6M. "The 20-year-old has struggled to make an impact since his move from Barcelona in a deal worth £8.6million", not 13.3 million.
At any rate, none of the sources explicitly say the deal is worth 13.3M. To add the figures together clearly violates the policy on synthesis of published material that advances a position.
With due respect, I observe that the IP user does not seem adept at English. ClubOranje and I are acting in complete good faith and we are just putting forward the most reasonable construction for the sources.

2010 FIFA World Cup Best Young Player Runner-Up

http://www.goal.com/en-gb/news/2890/world-cup-2010/2010/07/11/2021146/world-cup-2010-germanys-thomas-mueller-wins-young-player --Norbit36 (talk) 10:18, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have no idea why the 2010 FIFA World Cup Best Young Player Runner-Up, keeps getting added by the same user and his sock-puppet IP accounts, when A. he didn't received any type of recognition or anything for it, and B. other players articles usually do not include runner up awards ex: Lionel Messi or the other runner up to this award André Ayew. --Bocafan76 (talk) 16:48, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
By the way there was a discussion about this at WT:FOOTY, and it seems that since he didn't get any type of recognition this shouldn't be add it, with that in mind and that fact that the user that keeps on adding it, didn't care discussing why it should be kept, I makes sense removing it. --Bocafan76 (talk) 13:18, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Brazilian origin!

[edit]

Following the ethnicism trend of Mexican Wikipedians, I believe that his Brazilian roots should be stated in the lead. Also, it should be emphasized throughout the entire article so the reader does not forget.

Opinions? Thanks! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.60.4.90 (talk) 23:24, 18 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Height wars

[edit]

I notice there has been a bit of a quiet edit war happening here regarding Dos Santos' height. In an effort to put an end to that, can we find a consensus on which height we should use? The height has been been reverted on occasion with reference to what is listed in "the profile", however there appear to be multiple heights listed in various profiles, so which one should be used:

Looking first at the profiles currently linked...

Looking beyond the existing links:

As many sources differ, the question must therefore come down to reliability of sources. FIFA would have been issued the information by the national association, the increase from U-17 to adulthood is more than plausible and the 2010 information is definitely recent. Similarly CONMEBOL would have received such info immediately prior to the recent Copa. Ipswich may have measured him - indeed quite likely did as part of his medical - but his medical records may not have been passed to marketing; it is more likely they lifted the stat from the Premier League or Soccerbase databases. I don't know where Soccerbase gets their source data. Premier League is likely furnished the information on registration by the registering club, but the question would remain - do they update it each year or is his data from first registration 3 years ago. Some of the commercial sites listed above are generally considered WP:RS, while others are.....not quite so trusted! A little discussion is required, and AGF for those new editors and IPs noticing the current version does not reflect the most recent published information --ClubOranjeT 11:42, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if you have seen it as a problem, I have reverted a number of changes to hight of football players, usually by IPs. I looked at a couple of the profiles in the external links to see if the change could be verified before reverting. I think that I used the first pair that specified it which both gave 5' 7" (170 cm). May be as there is such a wide variation then it should be removed from the infobox and may be covered by a note specifying the range. Keith D (talk) 17:24, 25 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh I don't see it as a problem, and I don't care that much what we have there as long as it is the most reliable information we can determine, it is just we could all spend our time better than change-revert-change-revert cycles, and with the number of editors getting involved it really is starting to look like the 1.70 is not the most up to date stat. I could have gone with the idea of showing a range and footnoting that sources differ, but I see User:Tbhotch has boldly picked an independent reliable source and specifically referenced it. The fact it is a different height from what Tbhotch had previously reverted to is a very good sign of GF editing too. Let's hope other users discuss here first if they have issues with it. --ClubOranjeT 10:46, 27 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Retirement

[edit]

can we all just agree to call it and have him be a former footballer, he's been out of a job for 2 years now I don't think he's playing again 2601:647:4C82:61E0:FC7B:6539:ACD0:258C (talk) 03:28, 8 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I'm inclined to agree with OP though, what, are we just gonna call him a current footballer 30 years from now if he doesn't explicitly say he's retiring? (eye)rizz (talk) 04:27, 15 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
