Date of death
[edit]This article says 1806, but page http://wiki.riteme.site/wiki/Korean_painting#Joseon_Dynasty says "1818?"
The Turkish article says 1806
The French article says "1806, but perhaps 1816 or 1818".
The Korean article says "1806년 이전" i.e. 1806 or earlier in the introduction, and 1816 to 1818 in the side-frame
What says the rest of the web ?
- Britannica avoids. British Museum avoids.
- Page "http://atelier.de.francais.over-blog.com/article-23729522.html" (Chungbuk National University, South Korea) says 1805, may be later.
- https://www.koreana.or.kr:444/months/news_view.asp?b_idx=389&lang=en&page_type=list (The Korean Foundation is affiliated with the South-Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs) says 1806.
- http://www.flickr.com/photos/89235234@N00/8375219455/ says Kim Hong-do 1745-1814 ... musée Guimet (Paris, France)
As usual, none of these assertions (except from the last one) is backed by any quotation, and no one is discussing about the discrepancy 1805-1818.
An indication could be Yi Ki-baek (New History of Korea, p246) that asserts : "the popularity of genre painting constitued an artistic protest against yangban Confucian society, an assertion of the worth of all humanity".

– They are Korean historic figures. WP:Naming conventions (Korean) says that Revised Romanization of Korean should be used for no established English spelling. Gim and not hyphenating the syllables of given names, e.g. Gim Hongdo, Gim Jongjik, Gim Busik, and Gim Yusin, comply with Revised Romanization system. But Kim (Korean surname) and hyphenating are very common in the real world. @Garam and Brett Cox: This needs movers' opinions. Thank you. Sawol (talk) 07:23, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
- Comment. Here's the full list of articles about Korean people with surname Gim obtained by prefix search,
- On a quick skim, 95% of those are historical figures indeed. Per the Revised Romanization, this surname should be romanized as "Gim", but it is expressly listed as an exception under WP:NCKO#Family name. For the full picture, WP:NCKO prefaces that
Personal, organization, and company names should generally be romanized according to their common usage in English sources
, thus allowing for exceptions. I don't have an opinion on the substance of this RM. No such user (talk) 08:34, 12 July 2018 (UTC)- I advertized this RM at WikiProject Korea [1]. No such user (talk) 08:37, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
- Thank you for digging all Gim. Please erase five items:
- Gim Allon: not Korean
- Gim Bo-eun: living people, English sources Gim Bo-eun#References
- Gim So-hui: living people, English sources Gim So-hui#References
- Gim Toro: not Korean
- Gim Un-chi: living people, English sources Gim Un-chi#External links
- And English sources for living people Gim Gu-ra and Gim Seong-ju (presenter) would be found. There is no problem with Kim vs Gim. I recommend that problems with Gu-ra vs Gura and Seong-ju vs Sung-joo are solved at their respective talk pages. Sawol (talk) 09:38, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
- I brought the list here mostly for information; they weren't part of the original nomination. Nonetheless, I struck the five you mentioned. While this RM technically could mandate move of all of them, they would be probably best discussed case-by-case or batch by batch, as mass nominations often turn into a mess. No such user (talk) 12:23, 12 July 2018 (UTC)
- WP:NCKO and Revised Romanization of Korean #1 (Korean) do not say that a hyphen is required anywhere. And the spelling "Kim" is Korean surname based on McCune–Reischauer Romanization. But many historic Korean name is based on Revised Romanization of Korean such as "Gang" of Gang Isik. Thanks. --Garam (talk) 08:02, 13 July 2018 (UTC)
- Oppose. If Wikipedia's style guide is to be contravened, do it on a case-by-case basis supported by sources. — AjaxSmack 01:37, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
