Proposed merge with Donnan equilibrium
[edit]I suggest merging the two pages Donnan equilibrium and this page. It would have to be decided which is the more appropriate name. On a Google search for "Donnan semipermeable" I get far more hits than on a search for "Gibbs-Donnan semipermeable", suggesting that possibly a name such as "Donnan equilibrium" may be the more commonly accepted name, but perhaps "Gibbs-Donnan" is more scientifically correct -- I don't know. --Coppertwig 01:02, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
I think this is what people are looking for when they search Donnan Equ.
Donnan Equilibrium: If equilibrium is to be reached the electrical potential across the membrane must balance the concentration gradients of K+ and Cl‐ Membrane potential can have only one value. Therefore: EK = Ecl 58 log ([K+]o/[K+]K ]K ]i) = ‐ 58 log ([Cl‐]o/[Cl‐]i) log ([K+]o/[K+]i) = ‐ log ([Cl‐]o/[Cl‐]i) ([K+]o/[K+]i) = ([Cl‐]i/[Cl‐]o) Rearrange formula: [K+]o [Cl‐]o= [K+]i [Cl‐] i The product of the concentrations of the permeant ions outside the cell must be equal to the product of the concentrations of those two ions inside the cell —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.70.8.225 (talk) 04:49, 14 December 2007 (UTC)
Name
[edit]Should be Gibbs–Donnan effect (with em-dash), not Gibbs-Donnan effect (with hyphen): Gibbs and Donnan were distinct individuals. —DIV (128.250.80.15 (talk) 01:13, 14 March 2008 (UTC))
Example
[edit]I would like to include information about the pH change involved with the Donnan effect. Any suggestions or recommended sources? Shpang03 (talk) 21:33, 29 April 2016 (UTC)
