I would like to work on this page by giving a more broad definition of giant tortoise, explaining islands giant-ism, migration to islands, and giving examples of the species located on each of the islands around the world where giant tortoises live. Merge

[edit]

This article kind of goes over the same ground as Galápagos tortoise and Aldabra Giant Tortoise. Now I'm not pretending to be an expert on giant tortoises, but I think something needs to be merged :-) Richard W.M. Jones 19:30, 15 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I should not merge it with just the Galapagos Giant Tortoise, because there are more giant tortoise species in the world on different places. Several became recently extinct after human settelment, for example on Mauritius, Réunion and Rodrigues. Maybe it can be transformed into a disambiguation page (non-article pages containing no content, that only refer users to other Wikipedia pages). Pmaas 16:10, 25 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Do not merge. The giant tortoises does not only exist in Galápagos. :) Mathias-S 18:34, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
strongly oppose merger...distinct species of giant tortoises exist on different continents. ....research underway to expand wikipedia text by as early as june 06 Anlace 02:26, 16 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the merge proposal. Everyone is against, and simply because there are more species of giant tortoise than the Galapagos giant tortoise. Pmaas 13:50, 20 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

the part about the average lifspan should be fixed. The (claimed) third longest living tortoise lived only[[]] 178 years. <EDJE> [[1]]

Giant tortoise are a strange mixture from 3 or is it 4 different families - plus extinct as well. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 03:16, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesian species

[edit]

The lead mentions species in Indonesia, but all the listed species are from the Seychelles and Mascarenes? Is it possible these are referring to ones extinct for thousands of years (e.g. since arrival of man 50,000 years ago)?TCO (talk) 05:41, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Researched it. the Indonesian turtles have not been around for 100,000 years. they are more comparable to other exctinct species like in India or the Americas. Not Mascarene or Seychelles or Galapagos turtles. [2] TCO (talk) 05:52, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
there are some big river turtles, but that's different! (they are way smaller and are freshwater)TCO (talk) 05:53, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Likely the Asian giant tortoise(Manouria emys) which is found in Indonesia. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 15:00, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also Manouria Sondaari a member of the same genus, but this one is extinct. More listed here, giant tortoise is rather a weak term - the definition in that link is something with a max carpace length of 30cm or more. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 15:27, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Super Tasty

[edit]

There is a notable lack of information about how famously tasty these turtles were! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fawby (talkcontribs) 02:22, 22 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Size Comparison

[edit]

The article should have at least one picture/photo depicting just how large these tortoises are either in comparison to a common tortoise (garden pet thing) or a human (I think there are a couple with Attenborough.Angry Mustelid (talk) 17:23, 12 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Copyvio

[edit]

I have discovered that this edit (and it looks like several others) introduced non-free text from a-z animals. Here's the Earwig report. Elysia (Wiki Ed) (talk) 19:00, 2 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Updated report. Improvement and still some issues remain. Sun Creator(talk) 11:52, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Now okay. Removed copyvio tag. Sun Creator(talk) 12:02, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Not a taxonomically correct article

[edit]

This article is not taxonomically correct. It's just a collection of various tortoises with a vernacular name of Giant tortoise or large tortoises(mostly the extinct ones). Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 20:12, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A disambiguation page like Giant lizard, Giant frog, Large frog. Giant earthworm, Giant squid, Giant octopus seems suitable. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 20:33, 12 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Removed taxo box like some other articles army ant, amphibious fish, marine mammal and flightless bird. Regards, Sun Creator(talk) 16:02, 14 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Island Gigantism

[edit]

This article concerns only island species; giant continental tortoises are excluded. Drsruli (talk) 02:55, 28 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
