Gothic fiction?

Just wondering - while James' stories undoubtedly have Gothic elements (medieval churches, colleges, etc), my understanding was that he is considered to have removed many of the tropes of the Gothic horror story, instead beginning a subgenre which is classified as the "antiquarian" ghost story.
