Hitto background

[edit]

I read this in the comments of the Syria Comment blog. It's by no means a reliable source for a BLP, but I think it sounds believable and is not controversial or derogatory. Hitto's father was a Kurdish man who moved to Damascus after having become wealthy, so Ghassan Hitto grew up outside of Kurdistan. His mother is said to be from a notable Damascus family, which probably means she was Arab, meaning that Hitto is Kurdish on his father's side and Arab on his mother's side. Like most Kurds and Arabs in Syria, he is a Sunni Muslim. Seems like nothing clear is known at this point about his level of religiosity, sympathy toward Islamism (whatever that means), governing philosophy, Ikhwani ties or lack thereof, etc.—Greg Pandatshang (talk) 16:07, 19 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please remember that there is an old Kurdish quarter in Damascus and Kurds have lived in the city for centuries (Known as Hayy Al-Akrad). So his mother could be from Kurdish descent as well, until proven otherwise.Vekoler (talk) 21:43, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, she definitely could be. My speculations are a long way from verified information.—Greg Pandatshang (talk) 22:18, 20 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
