Two Unterseeboot 48 (U-48) have been operated by Germany: one during World War I for 17 months; the other during World War II for 25 months.

World War I

[edit]

U-48 served with the III Flotilla from 8 June 1916 until 24 November 1917 when she was spotted grounded after a high tide on Goodwin Sands, and scuttled by British patrol craft.

During her service, she sank the SS Minnehaha.

World War II

[edit]

U-48 was a U-boat of the Kriegsmarine. She torpedoed and sunk the ship City of Benares with the loss of 70 children. She was the most successful U-Boat in terms of tonnage sunk during WWII.
