Date of Death
[edit]- Can a Dutch speaker help out here, please? DirkvdM, come on down.
- Reve's precise date of death is not apparent (to me) from any of the references cited. There's a Canadian posting dated 8 April, so 9 April is the latest possible date. But who knows how long it took for the news to get out?
- Also, we show him at both 8 April and 9 April at Deaths in 2006#April 2006. So, there seems to be some doubt. JackofOz 08:36, 12 April 2006 (UTC)
- According to a local radio station in Zulte, Belgium (where Reve spent his last years), he died shortly before eight a'clock on Saturday, April 8.(http://www.canteclaer.be/content/regionaal/regiobericht.php?volgnr=2036). (the previous unsigned comment was by User:213.84.6.80)
- Ah, thank you very much. JackofOz 08:57, 13 April 2006 (UTC)
Fact checking
[edit]Infamous for breaking[citation needed] a rather archaic Dutch law against blasphemy in 1966, Gerard Reve was prosecuted for a piece of prose that describes the narrator's love-making to God, incarnated in a three year old donkey.
I tagged the above because it seems to imply he was guilty of breaking a law, and yet the german wiki article states he won the case (gewann den Prozess), and gives a cite:
Reve berief sich auf sein Recht, in seiner Literatur sein persönliches Gottesbild darzustellen und gewann den Prozess.[1]

Name
[edit]'Gerard Kornelis van het Reve' is the full name of this author. To be clear: the old name Van het Reve means 'of the Gate' (in a Saxon dialect), to be alphabetized on R, not V. Just his first book, De avonden was published by 'Simon van het Reve', and that only for the first two editions. Afterwards, until 1973, he used his full name. In the course of that year he started using the shortened version Gerard Reve, and that has been his final name, so to say. 'Darger Taveherven' was only used once for a short piece, not a separate publication. It really is not to be compared with 'Simon van het Reve'. You may mention other pseudonyms that are more well known, like 'R.J. Gorré Mooses'. If you google "Darger Taveherven" you find only non-Dutch results, translated from this English wikipedia entry. The way it is stated now really gives the wrong idea. Glatisant (talk) 16:56, 12 July 2008 (UTC)
Homosexuality, language
[edit]It is hard to overstate the importance of Reve's writings for the acceptance of homosexuality in the Netherlands, and difficult also to overstate the influence of Reve's use of language on the way modern Dutch intellectuals speak. None of the modern Dutch authors have had an influence on the Dutch written and spoken language like Gerard (Kornelis van het) Reve. He has a large following also among heterosexual readers because of his superior way of handling irony and humour. Quite right, as the article says, "He often wrote explicitly about intercourse between men". The statement is a bit blunt, however. Reve brilliantly used specific, sometimes old-fashioned words for homosexual acts, beset with deep religious connotations. These terms are understatements, and common now. Reve managed to point to generally recognizeable human conditions, to love hoped for, tried, missed and lost, and developed an idiosyncratical, very recognizeable Reve-idiom that may be used as a shibbolet to discern between Revists and non-Revists.
