Why is called a singer and an actor?
[edit]I don't know of any singing career that Butler has. If he has one, someone can put that back in the introduction. That he played a character that sings in one movie doesn't necessarily make him a singer. There are a lot of actors that have been in musicals that aren't listed as singers in the first lines of their biographies. I think listing him as a singer in the opening line is misleading. It gives people the false impression that he has a dual career both as a singer and an actor. Chicken Wing 18:57, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
Actually, Gerard Butler was in a Scottish rock band before he became an actor. It's been stated that they did not record anything, but he can be seen singing in many of his movies and television shows (Besides Phantom, he's seen singing in a few scene of PS, I Love You and in the BritCom Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.90.118.247 (talk) 00:45, 3 March 2009 (UTC)

Is the Dracula "succession box" really necessary?
[edit]as listed June of 2008
start box Isn't this a rather odd thing to list in this actor's profile? Wouldn't this imply that he portrayed Count Dracula from 1995 until 2002? — Preceding unsigned comment added by NeilN (talk • contribs) 17:10, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
Scots-Irish heritage or Scottish with some Hiberian Irish Ancestry?
[edit]Not a big deal, but I often read about his great-grandparents hailing from Ireland. Would that be N. Ireland and would they be descended from the exiled Scots who became Scots-Irish after being relocated by the English, or are they just Irish Catholics who emigrated to Glasgow and intermarried with Scots-Catholics? --71.177.165.42 (talk) 19:55, 21 June 2009 (UTC)
- he is a Catholic so it is very unlikely that he is of Scots Irish ancestry, just Irish would be the most likely answer.Mbr1983 (talk) 15:56, 20 October 2009 (UTC)
- Who cares? It's irrelevant! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.93.167.152 (talk) 22:30, 13 February 2011 (UTC)
It is completely irrelevant information. Not to mention nonsense considering that his family OBVIOUSLY moved to Ireland from somewhere else originally at some point in the past. Considering no people even lived in the island of Ireland a mere 6,000 years ago. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.104.199.97 (talk) 23:39, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
- Humans have lived in Ireland for at least 10,000 years.
- The name Butler is most likely from the Hiberno-Norman de Buitléar family. who have been in Ireland since the 12th century.
- As far as "irrelevant"? How arrogant and ethnocentric can you be you? That sort of arrogant denial of someone's ethnicity is a typical expression of the worst sort of colonialist mindset: "Oh, screw them, they're just a previous batch of immigrants, there's nothing wrong with our invasion, colonisation and genocide." — Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.152.94.226 (talk) 12:33, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Education
[edit]He studied at university to be a door-to-door salesman? Seriously? This sounds to me more like someone who is unfamiliar with English (at least British English) trying to translate the word "solicitor", which in America indeed can mean "door-to-door salesman" but in British English actually means "attorney", "lawyer", or even the likewise British "barrister".
I could be wrong, of course, but I don't know of any countries where you have to go to a university to study to be a door-to-door salesman. Your parents typically want you to get a higher education so you don't have to resort to being a door-to-door salesman.

- Gerard Butler qualified as a Solicitor, he even practised the law. An amedment to Ear Life should be made - acting as a solcitor is hardly an 'odd job'. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 85.159.130.152 (talk) 15:59, 22 July 2011 (UTC)

AKA David Davies?
[edit]In London, Butler (aka David Davies) in the Career Section, maybe someone should preface this with where or why this information is added or if even accurate? 96.253.163.47 (talk) 22:40, 9 December 2010 (UTC) or if not, just remove it per wikipedia biography guidlines 96.253.163.47 (talk) 22:42, 9 December 2010 (UTC) This whole line may be in question... Coriolanus: an idea map
[edit]Why have two editors randomly decided that a map that explores the work of Gerard Butler and company on his first leading role in a Shakespearean film isn't worth adding here? What gives?
This map includes the following: 1. pictures and poster of Butler on set and in publicity 2. interviews with Gerard Butler 3. videos that discuss the fact that it was his first big role in a Shakespearean film 4. he's the leader of the Volsci: of the top roles in the play/film, his is #2.
Perhaps you need to spend a little time exploring what the map adds to an understanding of Butler's acting career?
Thanks, --70.27.143.28 (talk) 17:03, 5 June 2012 (UTC)
- I agree with the two editors. The idea map may possibly belong in the film's article, not here. --NeilN talk to me 17:11, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Nationality
[edit]Is there any reason to classify him in the lead as "British" rather than "Scottish"? There have been a few anonymous users over the last week or so that have been persistently changing the nationality from Scottish to British. Yes, Scotland is part of the United Kingdom, however Scottish seems to be a more accurate term due to specificity. For example, we generally classify individuals born in England as English and people born in Scotland as Scottish on Wikipedia. Since the subject was born in Scotland, I don't see any reason to justify British as being a better term here than Scottish. -Aaron Booth (talk) 22:19, 29 March 2013 (UTC)
- Usual policy here is to leave nationality as is, unless there is very good reason for changing it. It also helps to follow as much as possible what the person themselves self-identifies as, rather than what editors may wish to label him (for reasons of their own). I've done a bit of searching around, and can find far more sources reference him as Scottish than British. I also can find many interviews/articles where he discusses his fear of losing his Scottish accent. So I would say it's safe to keep his description as "Scottish", there is no good reason to change it. --Escape Orbit (Talk) 18:51, 1 April 2013 (UTC)

Career section
[edit]The career section is a bit jumbled. The first two sections repeat themselves and the chronology is all mixed up. In the third paragraph he's 30 and it's listing jobs he had in 2004, then in paragraphs 4-6 we're back in 1997-2003. Some of the phrasing is a bit odd as well - e.g. the bit where it says he ran into an old friend from youth theatre and then says "at that time, he was her boyfriend". I'm not sure I have the writing ability to fix all of this, but I'm just leaving a note here in the hope someone who does have the ability to untangle it all could do so. 119.24.200.63 (talk) 23:34, 29 November 2020 (UTC)
