I removed the link to Category: American Criminals at the bottom. He has not yet been convicted. He most likely will be, but until then, he is not a criminal (at least in a literal sense). 64.122.95.110 15:44, 7 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Since he has just been convicted, I re-added that category. — 71.155.235.243 17:31, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the following text from the article:

For other Illinois politicians sharing the same last name, see Jim Ryan (politician) (former state Attorney General) and Jack Ryan (Senate candidate) (former U.S. Senate Republican nominee).

I can't think of a good reason for it to be there. If someone thinks I made a mistake, please put it back. — 71.155.235.243 22:27, 17 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It was a frequently cited point in Illinois during the period when they were all three politically active up to about 2004. I think it should be in the article, but not as a dab. --Dhartung | Talk 01:17, 18 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
The reason it was included in the article is because it frequently comes up when either of the three men is mentioned in a news piece, even if it's only an oblique reference.
IIRC, the identical last name of these Republican politicians is also mentioned in Michael Barone's Almanac of American Politics.

Illinois GOP

[edit]

We need to include a comment about how Ryan (and his scandal) was directly responsible for the undermining of the Illinois GOP, culminating in the rise of the ineffective Barr-Topinka and the electoral victories of Blagojevich and Obama. —Joseph/N328KF (Talk) 07:02, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Peter Fitzgerald took himself out of the race because he was not interested in being a Dubya kiss-up, then Jack Ryan defeated himself due to personal scandal, and the Illinois GOP brought in outsider Alan Keyes in desparation, so don't blame George Ryan for Obama winning for Senate. However, it is certainly the case that Blago's supporters used the George Ryan connection in their ads attacking Barr-Topinka. Whether that's the reason she lost might be harder to prove. Wahkeenah 17:24, 26 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
  • Political discussion always attracts mind-locked partisans who have no use for productive, objective analysis.24.14.130.22 (talk) 15:25, 2 December 2008 (UTC)Neil[reply]
    • It's also been said that the "Ryan" name may have played a factor in the losses of GOP candidates who shared Ryan's last name but weren't related to him. I believe it's been said that Jim Ryan's loss to Rod Blagojevich had a lot to do with the fact that he was a) Republican and b) had the last name Ryan. Because of George Ryan, voters associated both the Republican party and all people with the name Ryan or who were even the slightest bit connected to George Ryan as being bad. 76.224.66.11 (talk) 06:30, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • J. Ryan's personal scandal is what took him down. Blagojevich's own problems are liable to cost him at the next Governor's race. Don't assume Illinoisians are idiots nor partisan hacks. Illinois has sent both Republican and Democratic governors to prison for their wrongdoings. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? 15:33, 2 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Pardon

[edit]

There should be something about Dick Durbin calling for his pardoning and Mark Kirk saying not to. Could somebody look into that? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Poketape (talkcontribs) 04:38, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Safe Roads scandal

[edit]

This part of the article is slightly misleading. The Willis family tragedy was not the result of a crash. It was caused by their minivan striking a piece of debris on the road, which punctured the fuel tank and cause a fire that incinerated the minivan and the children. The debris was a part that came off a truck trailer that was being hauled by a driver whose license was thought to have been gotten through a bribe. The evidence collect at the scene showed that the truck driver was not directly at fault and at no time did the Willis' minivan ever make contact with the truck, which means there was no crash.

  • It was PROVEN that the truck driver got his license through bribery. When the authorities were investigating the incident, they found that the driver had a valid Illinois license, but could only speak Spanish. However, the written part of the license exam was, at that time, only given in English. So how did he get his license? The Feds were called in, and it was quickly established that licenses were being given for bribes. JHobson3 (talk) 12:17, 27 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
