Note

[edit]

A friend of mine is related to George Raffalovich, and I created this article after a discussion with them. There's no question he's notable, and I don't see any conflict of interest in creating an article about the relative of a friend, but I mention it here in the interests of transparency. Mother

[edit]

May one can make some sense of [1]. --Altenmann >talk 22:11, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Good find. I would guess that's where the story of Nadine's aristocratic ancestry came from -- she married the grandson of a French aristocrat. I don't think there's anything there that needs to be included here, though. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 22:24, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Correct. Second marriage of the mother irrelevant. I was more looking at "M. Raffalovich" - whether this is an initial (thus thickening the plot with the first name) or simply for "Monsieur/Mister". --Altenmann >talk 22:48, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Confessions of Aleister Crowley

[edit]

The URL for this book [Crowley, Aleister (1989). Symonds, John; Grant, Kenneth (eds.). The Confessions of Aleister Crowley] was wrong (a copy of the URL for Perdurabo). I noticed this because I wanted to check the claim "his mother was a countess". Per WP:EXTRAORDINARY, in Wikipedia we need solid evidence, not just rumors "according to one account". Can you clarify/expand? --Altenmann >talk 23:21, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It was on archive.org, I'm pretty sure; I'll look for it but may not have time till tomorrow. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 23:26, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Now correctly linked. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 00:14, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
And per your comment I've added a note making it explicit that it was Crowley who says she was a countess. I think it perfectly possible that Raffalovich made that up, but the source is explicit about it so I think it's best to let the reader see the source and make up their own mind. "one of Napoleon's ministers" was most probably Jean-Antoine Chaptal (1756-1832), because I dont think there were several Napoleon's ministers named Chaptal, but I am lazy to trace his descendants. --Altenmann >talk 23:36, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This makes the connection but gives a different name for the Chaptal who married Nadine. I would trust the source you found ahead of this. Mike Christie (talk - contribs - library) 10:39, 17 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
